Grêmio FC's José Carlos Vinhas played magnificently when he managed to stop the ball from hitting the goal, after a sharp shot by Thomás Brodel in the 15th minute of play. An unexpectedly hard shot by Gilvan Leite in the 23rd minute of play forced Quintino FC's goalkeeper Valdir Arce to throw himself to the left, to be able to save the ball. Betinho Passos fired away a screaming shot towards the goal in the 25th minute, but the shot went just over the crossbar without José Carlos Vinhas having to interfere. Gilvan Leite sent away a hard shot on goal in the 28th minute, but the ball went just over the crossbar and out. A very good chance. In the 34th minute Edinho Torres shot on, it seemed, an open goal, but Valdir Arce saw the ball coming and threw himself on it before it passed the goal line. Valdir Arce showed his good apprehension of the play when he made a fantastic save on a shot from Edinho Torres, who was totally free with the ball in the 37th minute. After 44 played minutes Grêmio FC got a freekick which was hit by Emanuel Marques. Quintino FC's Thomás Brodel managed to work through Grêmio FC's defense and was going for an easy goal, but he hit the shot with his toe and the ball flew outside the goal. Thomás Brodel dejectedly held out his arms as if to ask why the ball hadn't gone in.

When the match had gone on for 52 minutes, Edinho Torres put it in 0-1 from a short distance just to the right of Valdir Arce. An unexpectedly hard shot by Gilvan Leite in the 58th minute of play forced Quintino FC's goalkeeper Valdir Arce to throw himself to the left, to be able to save the ball. When Thomás Brodel came up free with the goalie in the 64th minute, the Quintino FC fans jumped to their feet. But the shot missed the goal by a fraction of an inch, and the fans sat back down disappointed that Thomás Brodel couldn't finish the play. After a defensive mix-up in Quintino FC's zone, Gilvan Leite stole the ball and had only the goalie to beat. Valdir Arce came out of the goal and Gilvan Leite tried to chip the ball over his head. To his dismay, the ball went over the crossbar and out of play. Edinho Torres was extremely unlucky when he, in the 79th minute, took a shot that hit the right post and went out. Edinho Torres received a nice pass in the box and took a hard shot in the 81st minute. Valdir Arce tensed up and prepared to dive, but the shot went over the goal with him having to interfere. An unexpectedly hard shot by Gilvan Leite in the 86th minute of play forced Quintino FC's goalkeeper Valdir Arce to throw himself to the left, to be able to save the ball. If Edinho Torres had kept his shot down it would have been a goal in the 88th minute. The ball went over the crossbar and out instead. Edinho Torres sent away a hard shot on goal in the 90th minute, but the ball hit the crossbar and went out. A very good chance for a goal. When the match was over Grêmio FC could go home with a victory in their luggage, having controlled the game far better than Quintino FC throughout the match.
