After some fancy dribbling in the 26th minute, Gilvan Leite managed to get in a good position for a shot. Grêmio FC's supporters rose to their feet, but Gilvan Leite was a bit off balance and shot the ball just wide of the left post. Donato Souza breathed a sigh of relief and went to take the goal kick. The supporters of Grêmio FC booed when Pururuca FC was adjudged a doubtful freekick after 26 match minutes in a wonderful position. Kiko Rodrigues didn't get a good kick on the ball. When Arthur da Mata came up free with the goalie in the 34th minute, the Pururuca FC fans jumped to their feet. But the shot missed the goal by a fraction of an inch, and the fans sat back down disappointed that Arthur da Mata couldn't finish the play. Pedrão Rocha received a nice pass in the box and took a hard shot in the 35th minute. José Carlos Vinhas tensed up and prepared to dive, but the shot went over the goal with him having to interfere. When Válbson Mello fell near the penalty area in the 37th minute he thought he would be awarded a free kick. The referee ignored Grêmio FC's protests and gave Válbson Mello a yellow card for diving instead. In the 37th minute, Válbson Mello hit a crossing free kick to the open man running down the field. In the 38th minute of the match Delfim Prata sent off a long shot with destination to the right of the goalkeeper, but José Carlos Vinhas skillfully saved the ball. After a defensive mix-up in Grêmio FC's zone, Válbson Bueno stole the ball and had only the goalie to beat. José Carlos Vinhas came out of the goal and Válbson Bueno tried to chip the ball over his head. To his dismay, the ball went over the crossbar and out of play. Juvenal Trancoso charged in rather forcefully in the 45th minute of the match, and managed to knock his opponent down. The referee showed Juvenal Trancoso the yellow card, and asked the players to shake hands before continuing play. A collision led to Grêmio FC getting a freekick after 45 minutes play. Juvenal Trancoso hit a great ball. Delfim Prata's shot was meant for the net just under the crossbar, but José Carlos Vinhas read the situation well and was quickly in position to make a wonderful save in the 46th minute of play. If Válbson Bueno had kept his shot down it would have been a goal in the 47th minute. The ball went over the crossbar and out instead. After a very even first half the match was still tied. The players went to their respective dressing rooms to discuss the tactics for the second half.

The wind increased when Gilvan Leite made the kick off in the second half. Pururuca FC's Arthur da Mata got a good chance for a goal in the 56th minute, but he totally mistimed the shot and it went over the crossbar. José Carlos Vinhas took care of the ball after a well-directed shot from Válbson Bueno, even though the ball almost passed him on his left side. José Carlos Vinhas made a fantastic save in the 92nd minute, when Arthur da Mata sent off a good shot on target.
