When the match had gone on for 21 minutes, Faustão Mello took a quick shot and it went in 1-0 without a chance for Zé Roberto Donatello to make any attempt to save it. After a defensive mix-up in Koepsel EC's zone, Hernani Coelho stole the ball and had only the goalie to beat. José Carlos Cardozo came out of the goal and Hernani Coelho tried to chip the ball over his head. To his dismay, the ball went over the crossbar and out of play. Eriberto Sousa might have been able to make a better finish in the 33rd minute when he tried to place a hard shot over Zé Roberto Donatello. Instead the ball went over the crossbar and out. After having played for 40 minutes, Faustão Mello managed to get in a good position for a shot on goal. The away team players looked dejected as the walked off the pitch at half time. They had fought hard, but were still losing 2-0.
