In the 6th minute the ball was on its way in behind Luiz Bernardo FC's goalkeeper Mauro Botelho, but with the help of a sacrificing defense, he could catch the ball at the crossbar. If Carlos Alberto Rosa had kept his shot down it would have been a goal in the 8th minute. The ball went over the crossbar and out instead. After 13 minutes, Maurício Lago mouthed his way into the referee's book. The tension between the Santos and the Luiz Bernardo FC players grew even worse after the yellow card. Maurício Lago hit a great freekick 13 minutes into the match. In the 16th match minute, Luiz Bernardo FC was awarded a freekick, the ball was picked up by Tostão Salles to maneuver through the defense. Santos's Fabinho Paraíba got a good chance for a goal in the 17th minute, but he totally mistimed the shot and it went over the crossbar. The supporters of Santos booed when Luiz Bernardo FC was adjudged a doubtful freekick after 18 match minutes in a wonderful position. David Mandrak didn't get a good kick on the ball. Benjamin Peres received a nice pass in the box and took a hard shot in the 19th minute. Mauro Botelho tensed up and prepared to dive, but the shot went over the goal with him having to interfere. An unexpectedly hard shot by Benjamin Peres in the 24th minute of play forced Luiz Bernardo FC's goalkeeper Mauro Botelho to throw himself to the left, to be able to save the ball. If Benjamin Peres had kept his shot down it would have been a goal in the 29th minute. The ball went over the crossbar and out instead. Mauro Botelho stood for a superb save when he managed to get hold of Fabinho Paraíba's shot from short distance in the 30th minute. Benjamin Peres sent away a hard shot on goal in the 35th minute, but the ball went just over the crossbar and out. A very good chance. In the 45th minute Rogério Prado shot on, it seemed, an open goal, but Valério Bueno saw the ball coming and threw himself on it before it passed the goal line. If Maurício Lago had kept his shot down it would have been a goal in the 47th minute. The ball went over the crossbar and out instead. After the first half the score was level. The break gave the players a chance to catch their breath, whilst the managers went over the tactics with them again.

Mauro Botelho made a wonderful reflex save on a shot from Fabinho Paraíba in the 51st minute of play. Benjamin Peres fired away a screaming shot towards the goal in the 53rd minute, but the shot went just over the crossbar without Mauro Botelho having to interfere. The referee felt a red card was in order, 71 minutes into the game, when Luís Fernando Lara put in a rough tackle. In the 71st minute, one of Santos:s players had the ball in front of the goal but got pushed and fell. The referee felt it was an obvious case and blew a penalty for Santos. The referee gave Luiz Bernardo FC a penalty, 73 minutes into the game. The penalty shot was made by Tostão Salles, who made a well placed shot into the net to the right of Santos's Valério Bueno. 1-0. 77 minutes into the game, Rogério Prado cracked a shot to the right of the goalkeeper, 2-0. Valério Bueno was not in position, and could only watch the ball fly in. After some fancy dribbling in the 82nd minute, Carlos Alberto Rosa managed to get in a good position for a shot. Luiz Bernardo FC's supporters rose to their feet, but Carlos Alberto Rosa was a bit off balance and shot the ball just wide of the left post. Valério Bueno breathed a sigh of relief and went to take the goal kick. Carlos Alberto Rosa fired away a screaming shot towards the goal in the 88th minute, but the shot went just over the crossbar without Valério Bueno having to interfere. Luiz Bernardo FC were really happy, having secured the victory after a very even contest. They thanked the players of Santos for a fine match.
