In the 22nd minute of the match, Andrézinho Travassos tried to roll the ball into the goal by the right post, but Fausto de Brito saw his intentions and got control of the ball before it passed the line. In the 46th minute, Raúl Paraibano left the goalkeeper for dead before tapping the ball into the right side of the net. The Varzedo fans were clearly happy with the effort and the scoreboard reflected the new score: 0-1. Even after changing tactics the home team jogged off the field with a 0-1 deficit. They would have to work harder if they wanted to turn things around in the second half.

Both teams looked relatively alert before the second half when the referee blew his whistle to tell Raúl Paraibano to make the kick off. After some fancy dribbling in the 54th minute, Dieguinho Mota managed to get in a good position for a shot. Varzedo's supporters rose to their feet, but Dieguinho Mota was a bit off balance and shot the ball just wide of the left post. José Augusto Fontes breathed a sigh of relief and went to take the goal kick. After 55 minutes of play Flamengo's Dedé Sanches was too eager in his attempt to stop his opponent and brought him down. With that he got his second yellow card and was ordered off the ground. After 55 played minutes Flamengo got a freekick which was hit by Dedé Sanches. Raúl Paraibano took the ball and in the 57 minute, shot a rapid shot to the right of a surprised José Augusto Fontes. José Augusto Fontes dived to the right, and did manage to get a hand on the shot, but it still went into the right corner making it 0-2. 60 minutes into the game, Varzedo's Delfim França nearly tore a hole in the net with a booming shot. José Augusto Fontes made a valiant effort, but he could not reach the ball in time, 0-3. Raúl Paraibano blasted a shot towards the goal in the 63rd minute, but the shot hit the top of the crossbar and went out without José Augusto Fontes having to make a save. In the 65th minute, Horácio Secco made a precise shot to the right of Fausto de Brito. Varzedo's defense was at fault, and the scoreboard reflected the new score, 1-3. In the 68th minute, Andrézinho Travassos hit a crossing free kick to the open man running down the field. Delfim França received a nice pass in the box and took a hard shot in the 71st minute. José Augusto Fontes tensed up and prepared to dive, but the shot went over the goal with him having to interfere. With a little luck, Flamengo's José Augusto Fontes got control of the ball when Delfim França tried to sneak it across the goal line. When the final whistle was heard the away supporters stood up and showed their joy. Varzedo had managed to secure a win in what was a close match throughout.
