After recieving a nice pass, Chamengo's Fausto Tepedino tried to score from far away in the 10th minute, but the ball went over the crossbar. The supporters of Chamengo booed when Costas was adjudged a doubtful freekick after 13 match minutes in a wonderful position. Jorge Henrique didn't get a good kick on the ball. After 14 played minutes, Chamengo's Fausto Tepedino shot from a long distance, and at first it looked like the ball was going into the goal, but the goalkeeper Nando Botelho came through and got his fingers on the ball before it flew over the goal line. He then quickly gripped the ball tighter before the forwards in Chamengo reached it. Nando Botelho showed his good apprehension of the play when he made a fantastic save on a shot from Genílson Pinho, who was totally free with the ball in the 17th minute. Mazinho Albuquerque came out of the goal in the 19th minute to try and stop a shot by Costas's Davi Hoffmann. But to his dismay, Davi Hoffmann quickly shot the ball in between his legs and into the goal making it 0-1. Eduardo de Lara received a nice pass in the box and took a hard shot in the 23rd minute. Mazinho Albuquerque tensed up and prepared to dive, but the shot went over the goal with him having to interfere. 27 minutes into the game, Chamengo's Francisco Alcântara nearly tore a hole in the net with a booming shot. Nando Botelho made a valiant effort, but he could not reach the ball in time, 1-1. Eduardo de Lara struck a weak shot in the 30th minute. Mazinho Albuquerque didn't even have to move as the ball rolled over the line well wide of the goal. A wasted opportunity for Costas. In the 32ndth minute of the game Davi Hoffmann who was perfectly placed tried to make a shot on goal, but Chamengo's Mazinho Albuquerque was lucky and managed to grab hold of the ball. After some careless play in the Chamengo defense, Davi Hoffmann kicked a shot that curved into the net to the right of Mazinho Albuquerque. The Chamengo fans voiced their displeasure as they felt that Mazinho Albuquerque should have stopped the shot. Genílson Pinho sent away a hard shot on goal in the 46th minute, but the ball went just over the crossbar and out. A very good chance. Even after changing tactics the home team jogged off the field with a 1-2 deficit. They would have to work harder if they wanted to turn things around in the second half.

But the shot missed the goal by a fraction of an inch, and the fans sat back down disappointed that Genílson Pinho couldn't finish the play.
