After 6 minutes, Fabinho Capixaba made it 0-1 with a short kick to the right side. A.E. Velo Clube's Cafu Koehler tried to save the shot but he was too slow in reacting to the shot. Arnaldo Viana sent away a hard shot on goal in the 10th minute, but the ball went just over the crossbar and out. A very good chance. Fabinho Capixaba fired away a screaming shot towards the goal in the 11th minute, but the shot went just over the crossbar without Cafu Koehler having to interfere. Thanks to some nice foot action and superb ball handling Arnaldo Viana in the 16th minute a chance for a shot on goal. With an extended leg and a bit of luck Cafu Koehler prevented the ball from getting in the gole. The supporters of Refugio EC booed when A.E. Velo Clube was adjudged a doubtful freekick after 17 match minutes in a wonderful position. Natã Amaral didn't get a good kick on the ball. Arnaldo Viana fired away a screaming shot towards the goal in the 18th minute, but the shot went just over the crossbar without Cafu Koehler having to interfere. Dráusio Duarte sent away a hard shot on goal in the 20th minute, but the ball went just over the crossbar and out. A very good chance. Oséas Trancoso's late challenge caught a A.E. Velo Clube's player on the shin and left him crawling around in pain. The referee blew his whistle and produced the yellow card. Oséas Trancoso helped the player get up and apologised. An unexpectedly hard shot by Arnaldo Viana in the 29th minute of play forced A.E. Velo Clube's goalkeeper Cafu Koehler to throw himself to the left, to be able to save the ball. The referee felt a red card was in order, 31 minutes into the game, when Fernando Moura put in a rough tackle. In a very dangerous position, a player in Refugio EC fell when an opponent tried to get the ball from him in the 30th minute. Penalty! The goalkeeper, Lino Brito, was totally fooled by A.E. Velo Clube's Valério Motta, who 33 minutes into the game made a penalty shot that went in on the goalkeeper's left side. Cafu Koehler showed his good apprehension of the play when he made a fantastic save on a shot from Fabinho Capixaba, who was totally free with the ball in the 39th minute. The players went to their respective dressing rooms to discuss the tactics for the second half.

The players of the home team were most fresh-looking when they entered the field to play the second half. Fabinho Capixaba was the one to do the kick off. The audience was convinced that Olavo Loyola's extremely hard shot when he got free in front of the goal was going in, but Lino Brito was relentless in the 55th minute of the game. Lino Brito showed his good apprehension of the play when he made a fantastic save on a shot from Olavo Loyola, who was totally free with the ball in the 80th minute. After a defensive mix-up in A.E. Velo Clube's zone, Fabinho Capixaba stole the ball and had only the goalie to beat. Cafu Koehler came out of the goal and Fabinho Capixaba tried to chip the ball over his head. To his dismay, the ball went over the crossbar and out of play. Cafu Koehler made a fantastic save in the 85th minute, when Eurico Arantes sent off a good shot on target. If Fabinho Capixaba had kept his shot down it would have been a goal in the 89th minute. The ball went over the crossbar instead. 95 minutes into the match, A.E. Velo Clube's Olavo Loyola sent off a blazing shot straight on target, a shot that Lino Brito narrowly saved just below the crossbar. The A.E. Velo Clube fans had already started to leave before the final whistle blew. Refugio EC were clearly better and deserved to take the win.
