Claudinho Tróia made an important save on a dangerous shot by Lino Félix in the 7th minute. In the 14th minute of the match Aírton Secco shot from a long distance. The ball could have gone into the goal to the right of the goalkeeper, but Francisco Valadares showed his good shape when he easily got hold of the ball. In the 18th minute, Júlio de Queirós got an opportunity to score, but he didn't get a solid hit on the ball and ended up kicking it wide of the goal. Naldo das Neves received a nice pass, split the defenders, and ran untouched towards the goal. Claudinho Tróia came out and tried to block the shot, but Naldo das Neves slotted it home off the left post making it 1-0 in the 20th minute. With a little luck, Severo's Claudinho Tróia got control of the ball when Inácio Branco tried to sneak it across the goal line. Severo were furious when Juarês Brito was red carded, 26 minutes into the game, but the referee dismissed their protests. The supporters of Cruzeiro esporte clube booed when Severo was adjudged a doubtful freekick after 27 match minutes in a wonderful position. Juarês Brito didn't get a good kick on the ball. After recieving a nice pass, Cruzeiro esporte clube's Paulinho Luz tried to score from far away in the 28th minute, but the ball went over the crossbar. After some fancy dribbling in the 29th minute, Lino Félix managed to get in a good position for a shot. Cruzeiro esporte clube's supporters rose to their feet, but Lino Félix was a bit off balance and shot the ball just wide of the left post. Claudinho Tróia breathed a sigh of relief and went to take the goal kick. If Narciso Lucas had kept his shot down it would have been a goal in the 31st minute. The ball went over the crossbar instead. The audience thought a goal was coming when Lino Félix got free with Claudinho Tróia in the 36th minute, but the goalkeeper managed to catch the ball with a huge effort. Narciso Lucas sent away a hard shot on goal in the 40th minute, but the ball went just over the crossbar and out. A very good chance. Narciso Lucas's shot was meant for the net just under the crossbar, but Claudinho Tróia read the situation well and was quickly in position to make a wonderful save in the 43rd minute of play. After 43 played minutes Severo got a freekick which was hit by Dênis Castro. All the noise was coming from the home fans when the whistle went for half-time. The home team had fought hardest to put themselves in a deserved lead.

When the second half was about to start, both teams quickly lined up and Durvalino Pirani made a kick off. After 51 played minutes Severo got a freekick which was hit by Durvalino Pirani. An unexpectedly hard shot by Lino Félix in the 51st minute of play forced Severo's goalkeeper Claudinho Tróia to throw himself to the left, to be able to save the ball. In the 54th match minute, Cruzeiro esporte clube was awarded a freekick, the ball was picked up by Magno Perez to maneuver through the defense. Durvalino Pirani received a nice pass in the box and took a hard shot in the 55th minute. Lino Félix scored 2-0 in the 58th match minute with a shot that went into the goal to the right of Claudinho Tróia, who was just a little too slow in reacting to the shot. Naldo das Neves fired away a screaming shot towards the goal in the 61st minute, but the shot went just over the crossbar without Claudinho Tróia having to interfere. Aírton Secco kicked well hit freekick during the 64th minute of the match. In the 67th minute Lino Félix shot on, it seemed, an open goal, but Claudinho Tróia saw the ball coming and threw himself on it before it passed the goal line. In the 70th match minute, Cruzeiro esporte clube was awarded a freekick, the ball was picked up by Magno Perez to maneuver through the defense. If Lino Félix had kept his shot down it would have been a goal in the 75th minute. The ball went over the crossbar and out instead. Severo's Claudinho Tróia played magnificently when he managed to stop the ball from hitting the goal, after a sharp shot by Lino Félix in the 77th minute of play. The referee was alert and spotted a serious foul by José Augusto Arantes during the 78th minute. The player immediately received a yellow card. After a rather tough play, Severo's José Augusto Arantes got a free kick in the 78th minute. Cruzeiro esporte clube's Lino Félix got a good chance for a goal in the 80th minute, but he totally mistimed the shot and it went over the crossbar. 83 minutes into the game, Bebeto Pinho threw the ball into play from the sideline. Cruzeiro esporte clube's Flavinho Vergílio quickly snatched the ball and retained possesion. Claudinho Tróia took care of the ball after a well-directed shot from Lino Félix, even though the ball almost passed him on his left side. Júlio de Queirós hit a great freekick 89 minutes into the match. Cruzeiro esporte clube's supporters were delighted with their team's performance and swarmed onto the pitch at the end of the match to celebrate the victory with the players.
