Silvio Bakar could have scored with his fast shot on goal in the 42nd minute of the match, but Luis Larra made a huge save. After having played for 46 minutes, Teofilo Handi managed to get in a good position for a shot on goal. Velez Sarsfield's supporters crossed their fingers, but Teofilo Handi was, after a quick turn that froze the defenders, out of balance and shot the ball just to the right of the goal.

In the 57th minute Teofilo Handi shot on, it seemed, an open goal, but Eliseo Umbruso saw the ball coming and threw himself on it before it passed the goal line. Silvio Bakar fired away a screaming shot towards the goal in the 59th minute, but the shot went just over the crossbar without Luis Larra having to interfere. Capillas's Eliseo Umbruso played magnificently when he managed to stop the ball from hitting the goal, after a sharp shot by Teofilo Handi in the 63rd minute of play. He then quickly gripped the ball tighter before the forwards in Capillas reached it. Luis Larra made a wonderful reflex save on a shot from Cecilio Piearres in the 93rd minute of play. Capillas's Eliseo Umbruso proved his good apprehension of play when he, in the 94th minute of the match, managed to save Capillas from getting a goal against them. Capillas's manager could be seen yelling to the referee that Teofilo Handi was offside, but the referee ignored the protest. 0-1. The referee blew the final whistle, and the away crowd roared, having watched Velez Sarsfield eke out a victory against a very well matched opponent.
