The supporters of Independiente booed when Leeds United was adjudged a doubtful freekick after 39 match minutes in a wonderful position. Osvaldo Eutropio didn't get a good kick on the ball. 41 minutes had been played when some careless play by Leeds United's defense caused the ball to cross the line for a corner. Emiliano Petri was slow to take the kick. During this time Independiente's players had a chance to rest. Independiente's Emiliano Petri was first on the ball when the corner was shot and he dangerously headed the ball towards goal, but Marcelo Galoer in the goal jumped up to prevent it from getting in. Aquilino Oso was really disappointed when he shot the ball just outside the right post instead of scoring a goal in the 42nd minute. Independiente's manager could be seen on the sidelines shaking his head and muttering to himself as his team had just wasted another chance. Aquilino Oso could have scored with his fast shot on goal in the 44th minute of the match, but Marcelo Galoer made a huge save. After 46 played minutes Leeds United got a freekick which was hit by Osvaldo Eutropio. With a little luck, Leeds United's Marcelo Galoer got control of the ball when Igor Sal tried to sneak it across the goal line.

The players of the away team seemed most concentrated when Teo Quiroga stepped up to make the kick off in the second half. After having played for 76 minutes, Iker Ugutz managed to get in a good position for a shot on goal. Independiente's supporters crossed their fingers, but Iker Ugutz was, after a quick turn that froze the defenders, out of balance and shot the ball just to the right of the goal. Leeds United's Marcelo Galoer played magnificently when he managed to stop the ball from hitting the goal, after a sharp shot by Emiliano Petri in the 78th minute of play. Igor Sal might have been able to make a better finish in the 81st minute when he tried to place a hard shot over Marcelo Galoer. Instead the ball went over the crossbar and out. Igor Sal ran back to his position shaking his head. An unexpectedly hard shot by Aquilino Oso in the 82nd minute of play forced Leeds United's goalkeeper Marcelo Galoer to throw himself to the left, to be able to save the ball. 84 minutes into the game, Independiente's Emiliano Petri nearly tore a hole in the net with a booming shot. Marcelo Galoer made a valiant effort, but he could not reach the ball in time, 4-1. In the 93rd minute Iker Ugutz shot on, it seemed, an open goal, but Marcelo Galoer saw the ball coming and threw himself on it before it passed the goal line. The corner went over the outstretched arms of Leeds United's goalie and right to Iker Ugutz. He fired away a shot at goal, but the shot had too much spin, and it went just outside the goal. Leeds United's manager breathed a sigh of relief on the sidelines as his team had managed to escape an almost certain goal. Independiente walked away with a well-earned victory that was much celebrated by the crowd.
