Teo Quiroga received a nice pass in the box and took a hard shot in the 11th minute. Cristobal Gaufred tensed up and prepared to dive, but the shot went over the goal with him having to interfere. Teo Quiroga fired away a screaming shot towards the goal in the 13th minute, but the shot went just over the crossbar without Cristobal Gaufred having to interfere. After 14 played minutes Leeds United got a freekick which was hit by Osvaldo Eutropio. Marcelo Galoer made a wonderful reflex save on a shot from Ignacio Iliana in the 15th minute of play. Santiago Poncio's shot was meant for the net just under the crossbar, but Marcelo Galoer read the situation well and was quickly in position to make a wonderful save in the 18th minute of play. Teo Quiroga might have been able to make a better finish in the 23rd minute when he tried to place a hard shot over Cristobal Gaufred. Instead the ball went over the crossbar and out. Teo Quiroga ran back to his position shaking his head. In the 29th minute Santiago Poncio shot on, it seemed, an open goal, but Marcelo Galoer saw the ball coming and threw himself on it before it passed the goal line. The referee was alert and spotted a serious foul by Edelmiro Precioso during the 30th minute. The player immediately received a yellow card. A collision led to Leeds United getting a freekick after 30 minutes play. Edelmiro Precioso hit a great ball. Roman Mendebal hit a great ball. Leeds United's Moises Jobo got a good chance for a goal in the 37th minute, but he totally mistimed the shot and it went over the crossbar. The supporters of Leeds United booed when Instituto Plate was adjudged a doubtful freekick after 41 match minutes in a wonderful position. Delmar Cortez didn't get a good kick on the ball. Cristobal Gaufred made a fantastic save in the 43rd minute, when Amadeo Gau sent off a good shot on target. After a very even first half the match was still tied. The players went to their respective dressing rooms to discuss the tactics for the second half.

Both teams looked relatively alert before the second half when the referee blew his whistle to tell Teo Quiroga to make the kick off. Ignacio Iliana could have scored with his fast shot on goal in the 56th minute of the match, but Marcelo Galoer made a huge save. After 65 minutes, Abel Federigo mouthed his way into the referee's book. The tension between the Instituto Plate and the Leeds United players grew even worse after the yellow card. After a defensive mix-up in Instituto Plate's zone, Osvaldo Eutropio stole the ball and had only the goalie to beat. Cristobal Gaufred came out of the goal and Osvaldo Eutropio tried to chip the ball over his head. To his dismay, the ball went over the crossbar and out of play. 97 minutes into the match, Instituto Plate's goal looked a bit too open when Moises Jobo came free, but Cristobal Gaufred reached the ball before it rolled over the goal line. The Leeds United manager could be seen shouting at his players as they walked down the tunnel after the match. He was clearly angry that they had squandered their superior possession, allowing Instituto Plate to win.
