When Elpidio Cordareo came up free with the goalie in the 13th minute, the Newells Old Boys fans jumped to their feet. But the shot missed the goal by a fraction of an inch, and the fans sat back down disappointed that Elpidio Cordareo couldn't finish the play. Esteve Tiadoro made a wonderful reflex save on a shot from Saturnino Gitano in the 19th minute of play. Ermegildo Esquipula fired away a screaming shot towards the goal in the 21st minute, but the shot went just over the crossbar without Esteve Tiadoro having to interfere. In the 24th minute, Fabricio Quinteros got an opportunity to score, but he didn't get a solid hit on the ball and ended up kicking it wide of the goal. In the 29th minute Fabricio Quinteros shot on, it seemed, an open goal, but Nereo Xabat saw the ball coming and threw himself on it before it passed the goal line. After 39 played minutes Godoy Cruz Antonio Tomba got a freekick which was hit by Marcelo Eliu. Esteve Tiadoro made a fantastic save in the 40th minute, when Ermegildo Esquipula sent off a good shot on target. 43 minutes into the game, one of Godoy Cruz Antonio Tomba:s players got tackled near the goal, and the referee blew for a penalty. Marcelo Eliu hit a great freekick 46 minutes into the match. The home fans were very happy to see their team leading 1-0 at half-time.

Raul Dolcet recieved an excellent pass in front of the goal in the 74th minute. Unfortunately, he received the ball on his off foot and could only manage a weak shot that went over the goal. Ermegildo Esquipula sent away a hard shot on goal in the 77th minute, but the ball hit the crossbar and went out. A very good chance for a goal.
