Paulino Cai blasted a shot towards the goal in the 17th minute, but the shot hit the top of the crossbar and went out without Godfredo Mendez having to make a save. Oscar Cordarrel struck a weak shot in the 18th minute. Godfredo Mendez didn't even have to move as the ball rolled over the line well wide of the goal. A wasted opportunity for Cheby F.C. Oscar Cordarrel fired away a screaming shot towards the goal in the 21st minute, but the shot went just over the crossbar without Godfredo Mendez having to interfere. The supporters of Cheby F.C booed when AZ Alkmaar was adjudged a doubtful freekick after 24 match minutes in a wonderful position. Sixto Fertus didn't get a good kick on the ball. In the 30th minute, Paulino Cai got an opportunity to score, but he didn't get a solid hit on the ball and ended up kicking it wide of the goal. When the referee blew for the end of the half the home team players were clearly happier, as they went in to the break leading 2-1.

Cheby F.C's Flavio Stanislao proved his good apprehension of play when he, in the 52nd minute of the match, managed to save Cheby F.C from getting a goal against them. After 54 played minutes AZ Alkmaar got a freekick which was hit by Zacarias Ikatz. When the match had gone on for 56 minutes, Paulino Cai put it in 3-1 from a short distance just to the right of Godfredo Mendez. AZ Alkmaar's Zacarias Ikatz got a good chance for a goal in the 60th minute, but he totally mistimed the shot and it went over the crossbar. Flavio Stanislao made an important save on a dangerous shot by Salvador Elija in the 65th minute. Feliberto Jakes hit a great freekick 67 minutes into the match. In the 80th match minute, AZ Alkmaar was awarded a freekick, the ball was picked up by Blas Duardo to maneuver through the defense. After a rather tough play, AZ Alkmaar's Sixto Fertus got a free kick in the 87th minute. A collision led to Cheby F.C getting a freekick after 96 minutes play. Alfonso Nerio hit a great ball. AZ Alkmaar's players left the field with heads hung low after losing a match that had been finely balanced throughout.
