But the shot missed the goal by a fraction of an inch, and the fans sat back down disappointed that Blas Esdras couldn't finish the play. The crowd rose to their feet as Tortugas's Blas Esdras slotted home a wonderful shot that went in to the left of Mariano Urtzi. That made the score 1-0 after 8 minutes of play. In the 12th minute Marcial Florian shot on, it seemed, an open goal, but Silvestre Pueblo saw the ball coming and threw himself on it before it passed the goal line. After having played for 35 minutes, Blas Esdras managed to get in a good position for a shot on goal. Tortugas's supporters crossed their fingers, but Blas Esdras was, after a quick turn that froze the defenders, out of balance and shot the ball just to the right of the goal. After a defensive mix-up in Freyre's zone, Blas Esdras stole the ball and had only the goalie to beat. Mariano Urtzi came out of the goal and Blas Esdras tried to chip the ball over his head. To his dismay, the ball went over the crossbar and out of play. The audience was convinced that Blas Esdras's extremely hard shot when he got free in front of the goal was going in, but Mariano Urtzi was relentless in the 40th minute of the game. In the 41st minute Apolo Sauveur shot on, it seemed, an open goal, but Mariano Urtzi saw the ball coming and threw himself on it before it passed the goal line. Teofilo Roldanillo fired away a screaming shot towards the goal in the 42nd minute, but the shot went just over the crossbar without Mariano Urtzi having to interfere. Silvestre Pueblo showed his good apprehension of the play when he made a fantastic save on a shot from Marcial Florian, who was totally free with the ball in the 45th minute. In the 46th match minute, Tortugas was awarded a freekick, the ball was picked up by Ovidio Perpinya to maneuver through the defense. An unexpectedly hard shot by Pablo Geofredo in the 47th minute of play forced Tortugas's goalkeeper Silvestre Pueblo to throw himself to the left, to be able to save the ball. After a very even first half the match was still tied. The players went to their respective dressing rooms to discuss the tactics for the second half.

After some fancy dribbling in the 86th minute, Blas Esdras managed to get in a good position for a shot. Tortugas's supporters rose to their feet, but Blas Esdras was a bit off balance and shot the ball just wide of the left post. Mariano Urtzi breathed a sigh of relief and went to take the goal kick.
