Gregorio Artaldo took care of the ball after a well-directed shot from Melchor Artal, even though the ball almost passed him on his left side. An unexpectedly hard shot by Melchor Artal in the 4th minute of play forced Newell´s Old Boys's goalkeeper Gregorio Artaldo to throw himself to the left, to be able to save the ball. Christian Claus could have scored with his fast shot on goal in the 5th minute of the match, but Gregorio Artaldo made a huge save. Victorino Modestio struck a weak shot in the 7th minute. Gregorio Artaldo didn't even have to move as the ball rolled over the line well wide of the goal. A wasted opportunity for Arroyito. Godfredo Bernebe's shot was meant for the net just under the crossbar, but Jaime Tadzio read the situation well and was quickly in position to make a wonderful save in the 13th minute of play. Samuel Montrel who was well placed in front of the goal fired away a dangerous shot that in the 29thth minute tested the skills of Gregorio Artaldo when he managed to save the team from getting behind. After a very even first half the match was still tied. The players went to their respective dressing rooms to discuss the tactics for the second half.
The players of the home team were most fresh-looking when they entered the field to play the second half. Alfonso Egoi was the one to do the kick off. After having played for 54 minutes, Samuel Montrel managed to get in a good position for a shot on goal. Arroyito's supporters crossed their fingers, but Samuel Montrel was, after a quick turn that froze the defenders, out of balance and shot the ball just to the right of the goal. Gregorio Artaldo showed his good apprehension of the play when he made a fantastic save on a shot from Samuel Montrel, who was totally free with the ball in the 61st minute.
