But to his dismay, Simon Izotz quickly shot the ball in between his legs and into the goal making it 1-0. Victoriano Bladi received a nice pass in the box and took a hard shot in the 23rd minute. Damaso Cordera tensed up and prepared to dive, but the shot went over the goal with him having to interfere. When Santiago Perrando came up free with the goalie in the 24th minute, the Newells fans jumped to their feet. But the shot missed the goal by a fraction of an inch, and the fans sat back down disappointed that Santiago Perrando couldn't finish the play. The audience thought a goal was coming when Victoriano Bladi got free with Damaso Cordera in the 28th minute, but the goalkeeper managed to catch the ball with a huge effort. Damaso Cordera took care of the ball after a well-directed shot from Santiago Perrando, even though the ball almost passed him on his left side. After a rather tough play, Maldonado FC's Julio Maule got a free kick in the 32nd minute. With 39 minutes on the clock, Julio Maule commited a dangerous tackle. The referee had no choice but to show him the red card. The supporters of Newells booed when Maldonado FC was adjudged a doubtful freekick after 39 match minutes in a wonderful position. The audience held their breath when Marcos Pereyra in the 41st minute of the game managed to trick the opponents defenses and fired away a shot outside the goal on the Damaso Cordera's left hand side. After 42 played minutes Maldonado FC got a freekick which was hit by Elvio Abreu. Damaso Cordera made a wonderful reflex save on a shot from Santiago Perrando in the 48th minute of play. Af the end of the first half the score was 2-0. The first half had gone as expected for the home team.

When the second half was about to start, both teams quickly lined up and Santiago Perrando made a kick off. Damaso Cordera stood for a superb save when he managed to get hold of Santiago Perrando's shot from short distance in the 95th minute. There were very few away supporters still in the ground by the end of the match. Most of them had left early, disgusted by the way their team had been torn apart. Newells fully deserved thier win.
