The referee ignored Vilelas's protests and gave Cipriano Casomiro a yellow card for diving instead. After a rather tough play, Vilelas's Cipriano Casomiro got a free kick in the 14th minute. Vilelas's Ferman Cañadas played magnificently when he managed to stop the ball from hitting the goal, after a sharp shot by Adolfo Obeko in the 15th minute of play. When the referee blew for the end of the half the home team players were clearly happier, as they went in to the break leading 2-0.

River's manager could be seen on the sidelines shaking his head and muttering to himself as his team had just wasted another chance. In the 73rd minute Nereo Argina shot on, it seemed, an open goal, but Ferman Cañadas saw the ball coming and threw himself on it before it passed the goal line. After a defensive mix-up in Vilelas's zone, Cornelio Henry stole the ball and had only the goalie to beat. Ferman Cañadas came out of the goal and Cornelio Henry tried to chip the ball over his head. To his dismay, the ball went over the crossbar and out of play. Gaetan Slaghmeulders received a nice pass, split the defenders, and ran untouched towards the goal. Ferman Cañadas came out and tried to block the shot, but Gaetan Slaghmeulders slotted it home off the left post making it 2-2 in the 79th minute. In the 82nd minute, Nereo Argina reached a very good position and smashed the ball with a huge effort into the net, just to the left of Ferman Cañadas. The goal made the score 2-3. River's Cosme Fernendo played magnificently when he managed to stop the ball from hitting the goal, after a sharp shot by Fabian Niva in the 86th minute of play. Ferman Cañadas made an important save on a dangerous shot by Gaetan Slaghmeulders in the 87th minute. After 88 played minutes Vilelas got a freekick which was hit by Patricio Liher. The River players were relieved to hear the final whistle blow to end the match. The away crowd was happy to see their team win after a very tight game.
