After some careless play in the GDB defense, Filipe Mendes kicked a shot that curved into the net to the right of Vicente Neves. The GDB fans voiced their displeasure as they felt that Vicente Neves should have stopped the shot. After 47 played minutes GDB got a freekick which was hit by Paulo Baião. The away team players looked dejected as the walked off the pitch at half time. They had fought hard, but were still losing 1-0.

When Filipe Mendes came up free with the goalie in the 56th minute, the Benfica fans jumped to their feet. The supporters of Benfica booed when GDB was adjudged a doubtful freekick after 86 match minutes in a wonderful position. Caetano Valente didn't get a good kick on the ball. Francisco Sarmento received a nice pass in the box and took a hard shot in the 92nd minute. Vicente Neves tensed up and prepared to dive, but the shot went over the goal with him having to interfere. Thanks to some nice foot action and superb ball handling Francisco Sarmento in the 97th minute a chance for a shot on goal. With an extended leg and a bit of luck Vicente Neves prevented the ball from getting in the gole. When the referee ended the match the Benfica players were able to celebrate. They had won a fair victory and recieved the ovations of their fans.
