Vince Appleton fired away a screaming shot towards the goal in the 40th minute, but the shot went just over the crossbar without Edward Harper having to interfere. The first half was very even, with the score at 0-0 when the whistle went for half-time. The players welcomed the break and quickly retired to the dressing rooms.

To his dismay, the ball went over the crossbar and out of play. Bournemouth FC's Sam Featherstone proved his good apprehension of play when he, in the 80th minute of the match, managed to save Bournemouth FC from getting a goal against them. If Vince Appleton had kept his shot down it would have been a goal in the 81st minute. The ball went over the crossbar and out instead. Gillingham's Edward Harper played magnificently when he managed to stop the ball from hitting the goal, after a sharp shot by Jonny Bourton in the 83rd minute of play. After 84 played minutes Gillingham got a freekick which was hit by Sam Brindley . Edward Harper made a wonderful reflex save on a shot from Vince Appleton in the 86th minute of play. Vince Appleton fired away a screaming shot towards the goal in the 90th minute, but the shot went just over the crossbar without Edward Harper having to interfere. After 95 played minutes Gillingham got a freekick which was hit by Sam Brindley . The Gillingham supporters could be heard counting down the last seconds of the match. They errupted in celebration when the whistle blew, knowing Gillingham would go home with victory in their luggage after a match that easily could have ended differently.
