The supporters of Shrewsbury AFC booed when Thamesmead was adjudged a doubtful freekick after 22 match minutes in a wonderful position. Jacob Housham didn't get a good kick on the ball. The audience thought a goal was coming when Alec Milburn got free with Danny Waltham in the 23rd minute, but the goalkeeper managed to catch the ball with a huge effort. After 24 minutes, Ivor Garrett mouthed his way into the referee's book. The tension between the Shrewsbury AFC and the Thamesmead players grew even worse after the yellow card. The Thamesmead fans' excitement grew in the 26th match minute when Thamesmead's Stevie Nesbitt looked to have a clear shot with the ball near the goal. Danny Waltham was clearly disgusted with the effort of the defense and let the defenders know about it. Alec Milburn succeeded in the game's 40th minute to shoot an unreachable shot under the crossbar and scored - 2-1. After 45 played minutes Shrewsbury AFC got a freekick which was hit by Ivor Garrett. All the noise was coming from the home fans when the whistle went for half-time. The home team had fought hardest to put themselves in a deserved lead.

Both teams looked relatively alert before the second half when the referee blew his whistle to tell Andy Holt to make the kick off.
