Andrew Rea was in the perfect position, and the defense had done a good job marking him, but Pierce Porter showcased his skills and made a perfect shot to score 1-0 in the 5 minute of play. 11 minutes into the match, Workington's goal looked a bit too open when Joey Adams came free, but Don Griffiths reached the ball before it rolled over the goal line. The supporters of Newcastle-under-Lyme booed when Workington was adjudged a doubtful freekick after 14 match minutes in a wonderful position. Jim Haylock didn't get a good kick on the ball. In the 21st minute, Sam Neville made a precise shot to the right of Don Griffiths. Workington's defense was at fault, and the scoreboard reflected the new score, 1-1. In the 25th minute, Andy Baird ran past the defenders and hit a shot which went straight ahead into goal. Don Griffiths was frozen by the shot and now it was 1-2. Andy Baird fired away a screaming shot towards the goal in the 32nd minute, but the shot went just over the crossbar without Don Griffiths having to interfere. Don Griffiths showed brilliant goalkeeper skills when he caught the ball after a hard shot from Andy Baird in the 37th minute of the match. 38 minutes into the match, Newcastle-under-Lyme's goal looked a bit too open when Bradley Topham came free, but Andrew Rea reached the ball before it rolled over the goal line. After some careless play in the Workington defense, Joey Adams kicked a shot that curved into the net to the right of Don Griffiths. The Workington fans voiced their displeasure as they felt that Don Griffiths should have stopped the shot. A collision led to Workington getting a freekick after 47 minutes play. Michael Gerrard hit a great ball. The crowd was extremely unhappy with the home team's performance in the first half. They were losing 1-3.

The wind increased when Carlton Inman made the kick off in the second half. Don Griffiths was a little too slow when Joey Adams got a fine hit on the ball which went right into the goal in the 52nd minute. The score was now 1-4. After 70 played minutes, Workington's Joe Bridge shot from a long distance, and at first it looked like the ball was going into the goal, but the goalkeeper Andrew Rea came through and got his fingers on the ball before it flew over the goal line. He then quickly gripped the ball tighter before the forwards in Workington reached it. Newcastle-under-Lyme's Joey Adams came free and shot a quick shot against goal 75 minutes in the game, fortunately Don Griffiths had problems saving as it came toward the left post. Don Griffiths took care of the ball after a well-directed shot from Steve Mayall, even though the ball almost passed him on his left side. Sam Neville received a nice pass in the box and took a hard shot in the 77th minute. Don Griffiths tensed up and prepared to dive, but the shot went over the goal with him having to interfere. Newcastle-under-Lyme made a substitution. Tod Whitford replaced Sam Neville. Workington's defense didn't have a chance, in the 80th minute, when Tod Whitford scored to the left of an out of position Don Griffiths, making the score, 1-6. When the match had gone on for 87 minutes, Tod Whitford took a quick shot and it went in 1-8 without a chance for Don Griffiths to make any attempt to save it. Don Griffiths showed his good apprehension of the play when he made a fantastic save on a shot from Andy Baird, who was totally free with the ball in the 92nd minute. 94 minutes into the game, Tod Whitford cracked a shot to the right of the goalkeeper, 1-9. Don Griffiths was not in position, and could only watch the ball fly in. Newcastle-under-Lyme played a much better game than Workington and deserved their victory. The Workington players were clearly disappointed as they left the ground.
