In the 10th minute Robbie Commons shot on, it seemed, an open goal, but Frankie Lagdon saw the ball coming and threw himself on it before it passed the goal line. In the 13th minute, Brendon Walls got an opportunity to score, but he didn't get a solid hit on the ball and ended up kicking it wide of the goal. In the 16th match minute, Grays City was awarded a freekick, the ball was picked up by David Kempson to maneuver through the defense. Eddie Morris's late challenge caught a Hoylake United's player on the shin and left him crawling around in pain. The referee blew his whistle and produced the yellow card. Eddie Morris helped the player get up and apologised. After 19 played minutes Grays City got a freekick which was hit by Eddie Morris. Hoylake United's Ralf Howson played magnificently when he managed to stop the ball from hitting the goal, after a sharp shot by Brendon Walls in the 28th minute of play. Denny Briggs fired away a screaming shot towards the goal in the 30th minute, but the shot went just over the crossbar without Ralf Howson having to interfere. Brendon Walls took the ball and in the 31 minute, shot a rapid shot to the right of a surprised Ralf Howson. Ralf Howson dived to the right, and did manage to get a hand on the shot, but it still went into the right corner making it 0-1. If Denny Briggs had kept his shot down it would have been a goal in the 38th minute. The ball went over the crossbar and out instead. After some fancy dribbling in the 41st minute, Denny Briggs managed to get in a good position for a shot. Grays City's supporters rose to their feet, but Denny Briggs was a bit off balance and shot the ball just wide of the left post. Ralf Howson breathed a sigh of relief and went to take the goal kick. Martyn Currie's late challenge caught a Grays City's player on the shin and left him crawling around in pain. The referee blew his whistle and produced the yellow card. Martyn Currie helped the player get up and apologised. After 46 minutes of play, the referee blew the whistle. It was a penalty for Hoylake United! In the 49th minute there was a penalty for Grays City. Todd Fairs stepped forward and shot the ball to the right of a diving Ralf Howson. 0-2. Luck had favoured the away team in the first, and they walked off with a 0-2 lead.

Jay Welsh fired away a screaming shot towards the goal in the 55th minute, but the shot went just over the crossbar without Frankie Lagdon having to interfere. Christian Platt charged in rather forcefully in the 56th minute of the match, and managed to knock his opponent down. The referee showed Christian Platt the yellow card, and asked the players to shake hands before continuing play. After 56 played minutes Grays City got a freekick which was hit by Christian Platt. Grays City's Frankie Lagdon played magnificently when he managed to stop the ball from hitting the goal, after a sharp shot by Robbie Commons in the 60th minute of play. Ralf Howson made a fantastic save in the 72nd minute, when Brendon Walls sent off a good shot on target. The audience thought a goal was coming when Brendon Walls got free with Ralf Howson in the 76th minute, but the goalkeeper managed to catch the ball with a huge effort. Jay Welsh sent away a hard shot on goal in the 77th minute, but the ball went just over the crossbar and out. A very good chance. Grays City's Brendon Walls got a good chance for a goal in the 81st minute, but he totally mistimed the shot and it went over the crossbar. After a rather tough play, Hoylake United's Jo Peakman got a free kick in the 82nd minute. After some fancy dribbling in the 83rd minute, Brendon Walls managed to get in a good position for a shot. Grays City's supporters rose to their feet, but Brendon Walls was a bit off balance and shot the ball just wide of the left post. Ralf Howson breathed a sigh of relief and went to take the goal kick. But the shot missed the goal by a fraction of an inch, and the fans sat back down disappointed that Brendon Walls couldn't finish the play. Frankie Lagdon showed brilliant goalkeeper skills when he caught the ball after a hard shot from Jay Welsh in the 90th minute of the match. After some fancy dribbling in the 91st minute, Robbie Commons managed to get in a good position for a shot. Hoylake United's supporters rose to their feet, but Robbie Commons was a bit off balance and shot the ball just wide of the left post. Frankie Lagdon breathed a sigh of relief and went to take the goal kick. The supporters of Hoylake United booed when Grays City was adjudged a doubtful freekick after 94 match minutes in a wonderful position. David Kempson didn't get a good kick on the ball.
