The audience thought a goal was coming when Martyn Goldsmith got free with Silvester Blackwell in the 6th minute, but the goalkeeper managed to catch the ball with a huge effort. Brett Lemerond showed brilliant goalkeeper skills when he caught the ball after a hard shot from Sammy Wright in the 10th minute of the match. Hugh Wilmott kicked well hit freekick during the 12th minute of the match. Alistair Kerr's late challenge caught a Widnes's player on the shin and left him crawling around in pain. The referee blew his whistle and produced the yellow card. Alistair Kerr helped the player get up and apologised. Alistair Kerr hit a great freekick 13 minutes into the match. Brett Lemerond showed his good apprehension of the play when he made a fantastic save on a shot from Scott Blacknell, who was totally free with the ball in the 17th minute. 22 minutes into the match, Widnes's goal looked a bit too open when Scott Blacknell came free, but Brett Lemerond reached the ball before it rolled over the goal line. The referee was alert and spotted a serious foul by Damian Floyd during the 23rd minute. The player immediately received a yellow card. In the 24th match minute, Widnes was awarded a freekick, the ball was picked up by Damian Floyd to maneuver through the defense. After a rather tough play, Hoylake's Laurence Hughes got a free kick in the 25th minute. Martyn Goldsmith received a nice pass in the box and took a hard shot in the 30th minute. Silvester Blackwell tensed up and prepared to dive, but the shot went over the goal with him having to interfere. Marcus Ackroyd blasted a shot towards the goal in the 31st minute, but the shot hit the top of the crossbar and went out without Silvester Blackwell having to make a save. If Martyn Goldsmith had kept his shot down it would have been a goal in the 32nd minute. The ball went over the crossbar and out instead. Alistair Kerr hit a great freekick 36 minutes into the match. An unexpected shot in the 37th minute by Martyn Goldsmith got the crowd on their feet, but to their dismay it went out on the left side. Marcus Ackroyd fired away a screaming shot towards the goal in the 41st minute, but the shot went just over the crossbar without Silvester Blackwell having to interfere. Martyn Goldsmith had several of the Hoylake's defenders around him in the penalty area when he, after 43 minutes of play, received a pass and succeeded in some way to shoot a shot which went straight ahead into goal. This resulted in a 1-0 score and a disappointed Silvester Blackwell as he didn't even see the shot coming.

The players of the home team were most fresh-looking when they entered the field to play the second half. Marcus Ackroyd was the one to do the kick off. With a couple of smart ball manuevers Martyn Goldsmith in the 53rd managed to get into a good position. With a left leg Silvester Blackwell saved Hoylake from getting behind. Martyn Goldsmith sent away a hard shot on goal in the 54th minute, but the ball went just over the crossbar and out. A very good chance. Brett Lemerond had great luck who in the 61stth minute grab hold of the ball when Scott Blacknell from a short distance tried to put the ball inside the right post. Silvester Blackwell made a wonderful reflex save on a shot from Marcus Ackroyd in the 64th minute of play. After 66 played minutes Hoylake got a freekick which was hit by Alex Adamson. After having played for 71 minutes, Marcus Ackroyd managed to get in a good position for a shot on goal. Widnes's supporters crossed their fingers, but Marcus Ackroyd was, after a quick turn that froze the defenders, out of balance and shot the ball just to the right of the goal. If Sammy Wright had kept his shot down it would have been a goal in the 82nd minute. The ball went over the crossbar and out instead. Jo Longstaff's late challenge caught a Hoylake's player on the shin and left him crawling around in pain. The referee blew his whistle and produced the yellow card. Jo Longstaff helped the player get up and apologised. When Jo Longstaff was, once again, overly rough in his play he received his second yellow card and was ordered off the ground. 85 minutes had been played. Brett Lemerond made a fantastic save in the 92nd minute, when Sammy Wright sent off a good shot on target. Widnes walked away with a well-earned victory that was much celebrated by the crowd.
