Marty Tully charged in rather forcefully in the 14th minute of the match, and managed to knock his opponent down. The referee showed Marty Tully the yellow card, and asked the players to shake hands before continuing play. A collision led to Dunton Green getting a freekick after 14 minutes play. Marty Tully hit a great ball. Philip Shilton could have scored with his fast shot on goal in the 15th minute of the match, but Billy Murray made a huge save. Denis Bradbury kicked well hit freekick during the 17th minute of the match. When Philip Shilton came up free with the goalie in the 18th minute, the Chatham fans jumped to their feet. But the shot missed the goal by a fraction of an inch, and the fans sat back down disappointed that Philip Shilton couldn't finish the play. After 19 played minutes Dunton Green got a freekick which was hit by Louis Saunders. Billy Murray showed his good apprehension of the play when he made a fantastic save on a shot from Tristram Worrall, who was totally free with the ball in the 20th minute. An unexpectedly hard shot by Gerry Knott in the 24th minute of play forced Chatham's goalkeeper Victor Goacher to throw himself to the left, to be able to save the ball. In the 28th minute, Philip Shilton made a precise shot to the right of Billy Murray. Dunton Green's defense was at fault, and the scoreboard reflected the new score, 1-0. When Tristram Worrall came up free with the goalie in the 32nd minute, the Chatham fans jumped to their feet. But the shot missed the goal by a fraction of an inch, and the fans sat back down disappointed that Tristram Worrall couldn't finish the play. With a couple of smart ball manuevers Tristram Worrall in the 38th managed to get into a good position. With a left leg Billy Murray saved Dunton Green from getting behind. Denis Bradbury hit a great freekick 39 minutes into the match. After a defensive mix-up in Dunton Green's zone, Philip Shilton stole the ball and had only the goalie to beat. Billy Murray came out of the goal and Philip Shilton tried to chip the ball over his head. To his dismay, the ball went over the crossbar and out of play. Thanks to some nice foot action and superb ball handling Tristram Worrall in the 44th minute a chance for a shot on goal. With an extended leg and a bit of luck Billy Murray prevented the ball from getting in the gole. In the 44th match minute, Dunton Green was awarded a freekick, the ball was picked up by Denis Bradbury to maneuver through the defense. If Philip Shilton had kept his shot down it would have been a goal in the 49th minute. The ball went over the crossbar and out instead. All the noise was coming from the home fans when the whistle went for half-time. The home team had fought hardest to put themselves in a deserved lead.

The hometeam waved at the audience when it was time for Tristram Worrall to strike the kick off in the second half. After having played for 56 minutes, Philip Shilton managed to get in a good position for a shot on goal. Chatham's supporters crossed their fingers, but Philip Shilton was, after a quick turn that froze the defenders, out of balance and shot the ball just to the right of the goal. The Chatham fans' excitement grew in the 61st match minute when Chatham's Tristram Worrall looked to have a clear shot with the ball near the goal. The shot wasn't hard, but the ball still rolled over the goal line to make it 2-0 before the goalkeeper had a chance to intervene. Philip Shilton received a nice pass in the box and took a hard shot in the 71st minute. Billy Murray tensed up and prepared to dive, but the shot went over the goal with him having to interfere. Philip Shilton fired away a screaming shot towards the goal in the 77th minute, but the shot went just over the crossbar without Billy Murray having to interfere. Dunton Green's Billy Murray played magnificently when he managed to stop the ball from hitting the goal, after a sharp shot by Donny Afful in the 81st minute of play. If Philip Shilton had kept his shot down it would have been a goal in the 82nd minute. The ball went over the crossbar instead. Philip Shilton recieved an excellent pass in front of the goal in the 97th minute. Unfortunately, he received the ball on his off foot and could only manage a weak shot that went over the goal.
