The crowd had been anticipating this game for weeks and the excitement in the stadium was easily visible. Mossley United's Pat Chambers played magnificently when he managed to stop the ball from hitting the goal, after a sharp shot by Pierce Lundy in the 4th minute of play. Alastair Cook's shot was meant for the net just under the crossbar, but Neil East read the situation well and was quickly in position to make a wonderful save in the 9th minute of play. An unexpectedly hard shot by Philip Duckworth in the 13th minute of play forced Mossley United's goalkeeper Pat Chambers to throw himself to the left, to be able to save the ball. Pierce Lundy blasted a shot towards the goal in the 28th minute, but the shot hit the top of the crossbar and went out without Pat Chambers having to make a save. Pierce Lundy sent away a hard shot on goal in the 28th minute, but the ball went just over the crossbar and out. A very good chance. Neil East made a wonderful reflex save on a shot from Derek Partridge in the 30th minute of play. In the 47th minute the ball was on its way in behind Mossley United's goalkeeper Pat Chambers, but with the help of a sacrificing defense, he could catch the ball at the crossbar. After the first half the score was level. The break gave the players a chance to catch their breath, whilst the managers went over the tactics with them again.

The hometeam waved at the audience when it was time for Derek Partridge to strike the kick off in the second half. Pat Chambers showed brilliant goalkeeper skills when he caught the ball after a hard shot from Philip Duckworth in the 51st minute of the match. 53 minutes into the match, Phoenix Football Club's Pierce Lundy sent off a blazing shot straight on target, a shot that Pat Chambers narrowly saved just below the crossbar. Phoenix Football Club's Russ Granville got a good chance for a goal in the 55th minute, but he totally mistimed the shot and it went over the crossbar. Vinnie English hit a great ball. In the 74th minute of the match Pierce Lundy sent off a long shot with destination to the right of the goalkeeper, but Pat Chambers skillfully saved the ball.
