Thanks to some nice foot action and superb ball handling Tommy Flynn in the 3rd minute a chance for a shot on goal. With an extended leg and a bit of luck Duncan Deacon prevented the ball from getting in the gole. Mexborough United's Brendon Cusack proved his good apprehension of play when he, in the 4th minute of the match, managed to save Mexborough United from getting a goal against them. Greg Gale fired away a screaming shot towards the goal in the 6th minute, but the shot went just over the crossbar without Brendon Cusack having to interfere. The audience thought a goal was coming when Anthony Knowles got free with Brendon Cusack in the 17th minute, but the goalkeeper managed to catch the ball with a huge effort. Ronnie Longstaffe received a nice pass in the box and took a hard shot in the 28th minute. Duncan Deacon tensed up and prepared to dive, but the shot went over the goal with him having to interfere. Duncan Deacon showed brilliant goalkeeper skills when he caught the ball after a hard shot from Tommy Flynn in the 30th minute of the match. Brendon Cusack showed brilliant goalkeeper skills when he caught the ball after a hard shot from Greg Gale in the 39th minute of the match. In the 43rd minute, Jim Edmunds hit a crossing free kick to the open man running down the field. 45 minutes into the match, Chalfont United's goal looked a bit too open when Ronnie Longstaffe came free, but Duncan Deacon reached the ball before it rolled over the goal line. Jim Edmunds kicked well hit freekick during the 46th minute of the match. After the first half Mexborough United were leading 0-1. They had played with great self confidence throughout the first half and fully deserved their lead.

The wind increased when Ronnie Longstaffe made the kick off in the second half. If Anthony Knowles had kept his shot down it would have been a goal in the 51st minute. The ball went over the crossbar and out instead. Greg Gale fired away a screaming shot towards the goal in the 53rd minute, but the shot went just over the crossbar without Brendon Cusack having to interfere. Chalfont United's Greg Gale managed to work through Mexborough United's defense and was going for an easy goal, but he hit the shot with his toe and the ball flew outside the goal. Greg Gale dejectedly held out his arms as if to ask why the ball hadn't gone in. With a couple of smart ball manuevers Anthony Knowles in the 61st managed to get into a good position. With a left leg Brendon Cusack saved Mexborough United from getting behind. Mexborough United's Brendon Cusack played magnificently when he managed to stop the ball from hitting the goal, after a sharp shot by Greg Gale in the 63rd minute of play. With a couple of smart ball manuevers Greg Gale in the 69th managed to get into a good position. With a left leg Brendon Cusack saved Mexborough United from getting behind. Tommy Flynn's shot was meant for the net just under the crossbar, but Duncan Deacon read the situation well and was quickly in position to make a wonderful save in the 71st minute of play. Vinnie Courtney hit a great freekick 80 minutes into the match. Brendon Cusack made a wonderful reflex save on a shot from Anthony Knowles in the 81st minute of play. In the 83rdth minute of the game Anthony Knowles who was perfectly placed tried to make a shot on goal, but Mexborough United's Brendon Cusack was lucky and managed to grab hold of the ball. Brendon Cusack showed his good apprehension of the play when he made a fantastic save on a shot from Greg Gale, who was totally free with the ball in the 84th minute. When Vinnie Courtney fell near the penalty area in the 85th minute he thought he would be awarded a free kick. The referee ignored Mexborough United's protests and gave Vinnie Courtney a yellow card for diving instead. A collision led to Mexborough United getting a freekick after 85 minutes play. Vinnie Courtney hit a great ball. After having played for 88 minutes, Greg Gale managed to get in a good position for a shot on goal. Chalfont United's supporters crossed their fingers, but Greg Gale was, after a quick turn that froze the defenders, out of balance and shot the ball just to the right of the goal. The Mexborough United supporters could be heard counting down the last seconds of the match. They errupted in celebration when the whistle blew, knowing Mexborough United would go home with victory in their luggage after a match that easily could have ended differently.
