Denzil Newlyn came out of the goal and Bruce Hopgood tried to chip the ball over his head. To his dismay, the ball went over the crossbar and out of play. Pedro Featherstone made a wonderful reflex save on a shot from Guy Munday in the 16th minute of play. Newton Aycliffe's Phil Poynton got a good chance for a goal in the 17th minute, but he totally mistimed the shot and it went over the crossbar. Guy Munday recieved an excellent pass in front of the goal in the 19th minute. Unfortunately, he received the ball on his off foot and could only manage a weak shot that went over the goal. Newton Aycliffe's Pedro Featherstone played magnificently when he managed to stop the ball from hitting the goal, after a sharp shot by Guy Munday in the 21st minute of play. Phil Poynton blasted a shot towards the goal in the 25th minute, but the shot hit the top of the crossbar and went out without Denzil Newlyn having to make a save. 26 minutes into the match, Huntingdon United's goalkeeper Denzil Newlyn had to clear away a ball on his right side after a cunning shot by Bruce Hopgood. Eddie Martin scored 0-1 in the 29th match minute with a shot that went into the goal to the right of Pedro Featherstone, who was just a little too slow in reacting to the shot. 33 minutes into the match, Newton Aycliffe's Phil Poynton sent off a blazing shot straight on target, a shot that Denzil Newlyn narrowly saved just below the crossbar. John Clegg hit a great freekick 34 minutes into the match. After 36 played minutes Newton Aycliffe got a freekick which was hit by Tommy Auckland. 42 minutes into the match, Huntingdon United's goal looked a bit too open when Phil Poynton came free, but Denzil Newlyn reached the ball before it rolled over the goal line. Bruce Hopgood who was well placed in front of the goal fired away a dangerous shot that in the 46thth minute tested the skills of Denzil Newlyn when he managed to save the team from getting behind. In the 48th minute, Eddie Martin got an opportunity to score, but he didn't get a solid hit on the ball and ended up kicking it wide of the goal. Luck had favoured the away team in the first, and they walked off with a 0-1 lead.

The players of the away team seemed most concentrated when Phil Poynton stepped up to make the kick off in the second half. Denzil Newlyn stood for a superb save when he managed to get hold of Phil Poynton's shot from short distance in the 53rd minute. Phil Jobson's late challenge caught a Huntingdon United's player on the shin and left him crawling around in pain. The referee blew his whistle and produced the yellow card. Phil Jobson helped the player get up and apologised. The supporters of Huntingdon United booed when Newton Aycliffe was adjudged a doubtful freekick after 55 match minutes in a wonderful position. The audience was convinced that Phil Poynton's extremely hard shot when he got free in front of the goal was going in, but Denzil Newlyn was relentless in the 68th minute of the game. Bruce Hopgood's shot was meant for the net just under the crossbar, but Denzil Newlyn read the situation well and was quickly in position to make a wonderful save in the 69th minute of play. Huntingdon United's Denzil Newlyn played magnificently when he managed to stop the ball from hitting the goal, after a sharp shot by Phil Poynton in the 70th minute of play. In the 74th minute, Huntingdon United's Eddie Martin ran free of his marker and smoothly shot the ball into the goal behind Pedro Featherstone. In the 79th minute the ball was on its way in behind Huntingdon United's goalkeeper Denzil Newlyn, but with the help of a sacrificing defense, he could catch the ball at the crossbar. The Huntingdon United supporters could be heard counting down the last seconds of the match. They errupted in celebration when the whistle blew, knowing Huntingdon United would go home with victory in their luggage after a match that easily could have ended differently.
