The audience was convinced that Sammy Ambrose's extremely hard shot when he got free in front of the goal was going in, but Robin Rooney was relentless in the 13th minute of the game. Daryl Jobling made a wonderful reflex save on a shot from Denny Gates in the 71st minute of play. In the 73rd minute, David Everett hit a crossing free kick to the open man running down the field. If Sammy Ambrose had kept his shot down it would have been a goal in the 77th minute. The ball went over the crossbar and out instead. Sammy Ambrose received a nice pass, split the defenders, and ran untouched towards the goal. Robin Rooney came out and tried to block the shot, but Sammy Ambrose slotted it home off the left post making it 3-1 in the 79th minute. After some careless play in the Hull United FC defense, Andrew Shuttleworth kicked a shot that curved into the net to the right of Robin Rooney. The Hull United FC fans voiced their displeasure as they felt that Robin Rooney should have stopped the shot. 86 minutes into the game, Clive Tabb was given a yellow card after he appeared to trip an opposing player.
