Mickey Parkin recieved an excellent pass in front of the goal in the 23rd minute. Unfortunately, he received the ball on his off foot and could only manage a weak shot that went over the goal. The audience thought a goal was coming when CJ Winehouse got free with Justin Hilton in the 27th minute, but the goalkeeper managed to catch the ball with a huge effort. Mickey Parkin received a nice pass in the box and took a hard shot in the 39th minute. Justin Hilton tensed up and prepared to dive, but the shot went over the goal with him having to interfere. The supporters of Holton-le-Clay FC booed when Newbiggin FC was adjudged a doubtful freekick after 40 match minutes in a wonderful position. Conal Jepson didn't get a good kick on the ball. No-one was surprised that the home team were leading 1-0 at half-time.

After some careless play in the Newbiggin FC defense, Drew Brownlow kicked a shot that curved into the net to the right of Justin Hilton. The Newbiggin FC fans voiced their displeasure as they felt that Justin Hilton should have stopped the shot. In the 73rd minute, Holton-le-Clay FC's goalie took a deep sigh of relief after Tom Stockdale fired away a hard shot that went just outside the left post. Newbiggin FC's Justin Hilton played magnificently when he managed to stop the ball from hitting the goal, after a sharp shot by Mickey Parkin in the 75th minute of play. Eric Crosby fired away a screaming shot towards the goal in the 76th minute, but the shot went just over the crossbar without Bob Simms having to interfere. After a defensive mix-up in Newbiggin FC's zone, Mickey Parkin stole the ball and had only the goalie to beat. Justin Hilton came out of the goal and Mickey Parkin tried to chip the ball over his head. To his dismay, the ball went over the crossbar and out of play. 88 minutes into the game, Holton-le-Clay FC's Mickey Parkin nearly tore a hole in the net with a booming shot. CJ Winehouse might have been able to make a better finish in the 97th minute when he tried to place a hard shot over Justin Hilton. Instead the ball went over the crossbar and out. CJ Winehouse ran back to his position shaking his head. Newbiggin FC's supporters were dissatisfied at the end of the match because Holton-le-Clay FC had won, even though Newbiggin FC had held more of the ball.
