Brendon Prior showed his good apprehension of the play when he made a fantastic save on a shot from Peter Masters, who was totally free with the ball in the 3rd minute. Ryan Childs fired away a screaming shot towards the goal in the 5th minute, but the shot went just over the crossbar without Brendon Prior having to interfere. Grant Blackwell received a nice pass in the box and took a hard shot in the 10th minute. Clive Adamson tensed up and prepared to dive, but the shot went over the goal with him having to interfere. In the 12th minute, Henry Simpson fired away a killer shot towards the goal that, to the delight of Clive Adamson, passed just outside the right post. In the 13th minute Henry Simpson shot on, it seemed, an open goal, but Clive Adamson saw the ball coming and threw himself on it before it passed the goal line. Alton's Brendon Prior played magnificently when he managed to stop the ball from hitting the goal, after a sharp shot by Ryan Childs in the 16th minute of play. Ryan Childs struck a weak shot in the 17th minute. Brendon Prior didn't even have to move as the ball rolled over the line well wide of the goal. A wasted opportunity for England. Peter Masters sent away a hard shot on goal in the 22nd minute, but the ball went just over the crossbar and out. A very good chance. Toby Hough hit a great freekick 23 minutes into the match. After 28 played minutes Alton got a freekick which was hit by Toby Hough. Brendon Prior stood for a superb save when he managed to get hold of Ryan Childs's shot from short distance in the 32nd minute. Ryan Childs sent away a hard shot on goal in the 39th minute, but the ball went just over the crossbar and out. A very good chance. In the 40th minute, Peter Masters got an opportunity to score, but he didn't get a solid hit on the ball and ended up kicking it wide of the goal. Brendon Prior stood for a superb save when he managed to get hold of Peter Masters's shot from short distance in the 45th minute. Peter Masters might have been able to make a better finish in the 46th minute when he tried to place a hard shot over Brendon Prior. Instead the ball went over the crossbar and out. Peter Masters ran back to his position shaking his head. After a very even first half the match was still tied. The players went to their respective dressing rooms to discuss the tactics for the second half.

In the 54th minute, Bart Bridgeman hit a crossing free kick to the open man running down the field. England's Matty Emberson shoveled away a really nice long shot in the 55th minute of play. The shot was stopped by Brendon Prior but with some difficulty. England's Ralph Sheldon got a good chance for a goal in the 58th minute, but he totally mistimed the shot and it went over the crossbar. 59 minutes into the match, Alton's goal looked a bit too open when Ryan Childs came free, but Brendon Prior reached the ball before it rolled over the goal line. Ryan Childs's shot when he came free in front of the goal in the 69thth minute, Brendon Prior skillfully showed off with a save to what seemed to be an obvious goal. In the 76th minute of the match, Peter Masters tried to roll the ball into the goal by the right post, but Brendon Prior saw his intentions and got control of the ball before it passed the line. Ryan Childs fired away a screaming shot towards the goal in the 78th minute, but the shot went just over the crossbar without Brendon Prior having to interfere. 80 minutes into the match, Henry Simpson notched a goal, 1-0, to the right of England's Clive Adamson. Clive Adamson was clearly disgusted with the effort of the defense and let the defenders know about it. The long shot by Andrew Barber in the 84th minute really tested Brendon Prior's skills. The ball was on its way into the goal to the left of him when he managed to stretch himself and save the shot and avoid a goal. Peter Masters sent away a hard shot on goal in the 97th minute, but the ball went just over the crossbar and out. A very good chance. The Alton players were eager to celebrate when the final whistle sounded. They had somehow managed to win, even though the away team had held the majority of the possession.
