The supporters of Polperro booed when Hayling Island was adjudged a doubtful freekick after 17 match minutes in a wonderful position. Eric Woodcock didn't get a good kick on the ball. Polperro's Peter Bamford played magnificently when he managed to stop the ball from hitting the goal, after a sharp shot by Liam Palmer in the 22nd minute of play. After some fancy dribbling in the 26th minute, Liam Palmer managed to get in a good position for a shot. Hayling Island's supporters rose to their feet, but Liam Palmer was a bit off balance and shot the ball just wide of the left post. Peter Bamford breathed a sigh of relief and went to take the goal kick. After a rather tough play, Polperro's Ray Osmond got a free kick in the 27th minute. With a little luck, Hayling Island's Andrew Childs got control of the ball when Ray Osmond tried to sneak it across the goal line. Liam Palmer scored 0-1 in the 35th match minute with a shot that went into the goal to the right of Peter Bamford, who was just a little too slow in reacting to the shot. Liam Palmer fired away a screaming shot towards the goal in the 44th minute, but the shot went just over the crossbar without Peter Bamford having to interfere. Ray Osmond's late challenge caught a Hayling Island's player on the shin and left him crawling around in pain. The referee blew his whistle and produced the yellow card. Ray Osmond helped the player get up and apologised.

When the second half was about to start, both teams quickly lined up and Liam Palmer made a kick off. Peter Bamford showed his good apprehension of the play when he made a fantastic save on a shot from Liam Palmer, who was totally free with the ball in the 54th minute. After a defensive mix-up in Hayling Island's zone, Felix Bridgeworth stole the ball and had only the goalie to beat. Andrew Childs came out of the goal and Felix Bridgeworth tried to chip the ball over his head. To his dismay, the ball went over the crossbar and out of play. In the 89th minute, Hayling Island's Liam Palmer ran free of his marker and smoothly shot the ball into the goal behind Peter Bamford. Peter Bamford yelled at his defense, as they had left him out to dry. 0-3. Liam Palmer's late challenge caught a Polperro's player on the shin and left him crawling around in pain. Liam Palmer hit a great ball. In the 93rd minute Felix Bridgeworth shot on, it seemed, an open goal, but Andrew Childs saw the ball coming and threw himself on it before it passed the goal line. The Hayling Island supporters could be heard counting down the last seconds of the match. They errupted in celebration when the whistle blew, knowing Hayling Island would go home with victory in their luggage after a match that easily could have ended differently.
