Welling's supporters rose to their feet, but Al Newlyn was a bit off balance and shot the ball just wide of the left post. Jonathan Reading breathed a sigh of relief and went to take the goal kick. Al Newlyn sent away a hard shot on goal in the 11th minute, but the ball went just over the crossbar and out. A very good chance. After a defensive mix-up in liverpool fc's zone, Al Newlyn stole the ball and had only the goalie to beat. Jonathan Reading came out of the goal and Al Newlyn tried to chip the ball over his head. To his dismay, the ball went over the crossbar and out of play. In the 15th minute, Kev Carr ran past the defenders and hit a shot which went straight ahead into goal. Rich Hurst was frozen by the shot and now it was 1-0. Quentin Clifton hit a great freekick 18 minutes into the match. After 19 played minutes, Welling's Luke Shephard shot from a long distance, and at first it looked like the ball was going into the goal, but the goalkeeper Jonathan Reading came through and got his fingers on the ball before it flew over the goal line. He then quickly gripped the ball tighter before the forwards in Welling reached it. Jonathan Reading came out of the goal in the 20th minute to try and stop a shot by Welling's Al Newlyn. But to his dismay, Al Newlyn quickly shot the ball in between his legs and into the goal making it 1-1. Welling's Loyd Lofthouse got a good chance for a goal in the 29th minute, but he totally mistimed the shot and it went over the crossbar. After having played for 31 minutes, Al Newlyn managed to get in a good position for a shot on goal. Welling's supporters crossed their fingers, but Al Newlyn was, after a quick turn that froze the defenders, out of balance and shot the ball just to the right of the goal. Rich Hurst took care of the ball after a well-directed shot from Richard Berryman, even though the ball almost passed him on his left side. 47 minutes into the match, Welling's goal looked a bit too open when Richard Berryman came free, but Rich Hurst reached the ball before it rolled over the goal line. After fighting hard for a draw in the first half, the players were able to take a much needed rest.

The audience was convinced that Loyd Lofthouse's extremely hard shot when he got free in front of the goal was going in, but Jonathan Reading was relentless in the 70th minute of the game. The supporters of Welling booed when liverpool fc was adjudged a doubtful freekick after 71 match minutes in a wonderful position. Ralph MacDonald didn't get a good kick on the ball. Richard Berryman fired away a screaming shot towards the goal in the 73rd minute, but the shot went just over the crossbar without Rich Hurst having to interfere. Rich Hurst made a wonderful reflex save on a shot from Richard Berryman in the 83rd minute of play. 91 minutes into the match, Welling's goal looked a bit too open when Richard Berryman came free, but Rich Hurst reached the ball before it rolled over the goal line. In the 92nd minute Kev Carr shot on, it seemed, an open goal, but Rich Hurst saw the ball coming and threw himself on it before it passed the goal line. After some careless play in the Welling defense, Kev Carr kicked a shot that curved into the net to the right of Rich Hurst. The Welling fans voiced their displeasure as they felt that Rich Hurst should have stopped the shot. After 96 played minutes, liverpool fc's Harvey Trunks shot from a long distance, and at first it looked like the ball was going into the goal, but the goalkeeper Rich Hurst came through and got his fingers on the ball before it flew over the goal line. He then quickly gripped the ball tighter before the forwards in liverpool fc reached it. Welling's players left the field with heads hung low after losing a match that had been finely balanced throughout.
