Louie Butterfield made a fantastic save in the 3rd minute, when Kris Renner sent off a good shot on target. Ely's Lawrence Howlett played magnificently when he managed to stop the ball from hitting the goal, after a sharp shot by Laurence Moxon in the 4th minute of play. Louie Butterfield showed brilliant goalkeeper skills when he caught the ball after a hard shot from Kieran Rothery in the 6th minute of the match. Gavin Rusby hit a great freekick 12 minutes into the match. After a defensive mix-up in Ely's zone, Laurence Moxon stole the ball and had only the goalie to beat. Lawrence Howlett came out of the goal and Laurence Moxon tried to chip the ball over his head. To his dismay, the ball went over the crossbar and out of play. The supporters of Hornchurch booed when Ely was adjudged a doubtful freekick after 16 match minutes in a wonderful position. Denny Kirkpatrick didn't get a good kick on the ball. Kris Renner received a nice pass in the box and took a hard shot in the 20th minute. Louie Butterfield tensed up and prepared to dive, but the shot went over the goal with him having to interfere. Lawrence Howlett took care of the ball after a well-directed shot from Laurence Moxon, even though the ball almost passed him on his left side. In the 25th minute, Rodney Greenfield ran past the defenders and hit a shot which went straight ahead into goal. Lawrence Howlett was frozen by the shot and now it was 0-1. An unexpectedly hard shot by Laurence Moxon in the 28th minute of play forced Ely's goalkeeper Lawrence Howlett to throw himself to the left, to be able to save the ball. After some fancy dribbling in the 29th minute, Kris Renner managed to get in a good position for a shot. Ely's supporters rose to their feet, but Kris Renner was a bit off balance and shot the ball just wide of the left post. Louie Butterfield breathed a sigh of relief and went to take the goal kick. Hornchurch's goalkeeper couldn't reach when Kieran Rothery 31 minutes into the game got a good kick on the ball which found its way into goal just inside left pole. 1-1. If Kieran Rothery had kept his shot down it would have been a goal in the 35th minute. The ball went over the crossbar and out instead. Laurence Moxon recieved an excellent pass in front of the goal in the 37th minute. Unfortunately, he received the ball on his off foot and could only manage a weak shot that went over the goal. In the 40th minute Kieran Rothery shot on, it seemed, an open goal, but Louie Butterfield saw the ball coming and threw himself on it before it passed the goal line. The supporters of Hornchurch booed when Ely was adjudged a doubtful freekick after 47 match minutes in a wonderful position. Kris Renner didn't get a good kick on the ball. After the first half the score was level. The break gave the players a chance to catch their breath, whilst the managers went over the tactics with them again.

The wind increased when Kieran Rothery made the kick off in the second half. Abraham Inman kicked well hit freekick during the 51st minute of the match. Jez Alsford hit a great freekick 57 minutes into the match. If Kieran Rothery had kept his shot down it would have been a goal in the 64th minute. The ball went over the crossbar and out instead. Kris Renner struck a weak shot in the 66th minute. Louie Butterfield didn't even have to move as the ball rolled over the line well wide of the goal. A wasted opportunity for Ely. Kris Renner sent away a hard shot on goal in the 72nd minute, but the ball went just over the crossbar and out. A very good chance. Lewis Liddle kicked well hit freekick during the 78th minute of the match. Louie Butterfield took care of the ball after a well-directed shot from Kieran Rothery, even though the ball almost passed him on his left side. A collision led to Hornchurch getting a freekick after 95 minutes play. Laurence Moxon hit a great ball. Kieran Rothery took the ball and in the 96 minute, shot a rapid shot to the right of a surprised Louie Butterfield. Louie Butterfield dived to the right, and did manage to get a hand on the shot, but it still went into the right corner making it 2-1. Hornchurch's players left the field with heads hung low after losing a match that had been finely balanced throughout.
