Spectators: 7518 (Terracing: 5639, Seating: 1729, VIP seats: 150) It was fairly windy and cold on the field when John-Paul Hepburn kicked off to start the match. In the 3rd minute, John-Paul Hepburn made a precise shot to the right of Charles Coulson. Berwick Rangers's defense was at fault, and the scoreboard reflected the new score, 1-0. Vic Lawton didn't have a chance when a screaming shot from Vinnie Kempson went, in the 7th minute, to the upper right corner, 1-1 was the resulting score. John-Paul Hepburn struck a weak shot in the 14th minute. Charles Coulson didn't even have to move as the ball rolled over the line well wide of the goal. A wasted opportunity for Reading F.C. After some fancy dribbling in the 16th minute, Jools Tindale managed to get in a good position for a shot. Reading F.C's supporters rose to their feet, but Jools Tindale was a bit off balance and shot the ball just wide of the left post. Charles Coulson breathed a sigh of relief and went to take the goal kick. Reg Merris kicked well hit freekick during the 19th minute of the match. It was beautiful to see Berwick Rangers's Ricky Myers in action when he in the 21st minute dribbled his way through a couple of opponents and the fired away a shot from almost standing still. First the ball seemed to get in, but turned out to be on the outside of the net. A great chance! In the 25th minute, Jools Tindale ran past the defenders and hit a shot which went straight ahead into goal. Charles Coulson was frozen by the shot and now it was 2-1. Ricky Myers was probably a little too eager to shoot when he, in the 29th played minute, shot the ball from way out. The shot was hard, but the ball flew wide of the goal. In the 37th minute, Bobby Mortimer got an opportunity to score, but he didn't get a solid hit on the ball and ended up kicking it wide of the goal. Charles Coulson made a fantastic save in the 41st minute, when Jools Tindale sent off a good shot on target. The home fans were very happy to see their team leading 3-1 at half-time.

The players of the home team were most fresh-looking when they entered the field to play the second half. Vinnie Kempson was the one to do the kick off. 55 minutes into the match, Berwick Rangers's goal looked a bit too open when Jools Tindale came free, but Charles Coulson reached the ball before it rolled over the goal line. The supporters of Reading F.C booed when Berwick Rangers was adjudged a doubtful freekick after 57 match minutes in a wonderful position. Graham Whittington didn't get a good kick on the ball. In the 58th minute of the match Loyd Bond sent off a long shot with destination to the right of the goalkeeper, but Charles Coulson skillfully saved the ball. A collision led to Berwick Rangers getting a freekick after 58 minutes play. Graham Whittington hit a great ball. After having played for 59 minutes, John-Paul Hepburn managed to get in a good position for a shot on goal. Reading F.C's supporters crossed their fingers, but John-Paul Hepburn was, after a quick turn that froze the defenders, out of balance and shot the ball just to the right of the goal. When Reading F.C's John-Paul Hepburn in the 66th minute got a chance for a shot 66th didn't hesitate and placed the ball to the right of the goalie. A beautiful save bye Berwick Rangers's goalie prevented a goal. Bobby Mortimer received a nice pass in the box and took a hard shot in the 71st minute. Vic Lawton tensed up and prepared to dive, but the shot went over the goal with him having to interfere. Vic Lawton stood for a superb save when he managed to get hold of Graham Whittington's shot from short distance in the 73rd minute. Jools Tindale scored 4-1 in the 76th match minute with a shot that went into the goal to the right of Charles Coulson, who was just a little too slow in reacting to the shot. Lee Sutherland hit a great freekick 80 minutes into the match. John-Paul Hepburn received a nice pass in the box and took a hard shot in the 83rd minute. Charles Coulson tensed up and prepared to dive, but the shot went over the goal with him having to interfere. After a defensive mix-up in Berwick Rangers's zone, Carlton Winship stole the ball and had only the goalie to beat. Charles Coulson came out of the goal and Carlton Winship tried to chip the ball over his head. To his dismay, the ball went over the crossbar and out of play. Berwick Rangers's Vinnie Kempson was standing unmarked in front of the goal when he, in the 91st play minute, got the ball and easily drilled it into the goal. The crowd rose to their feet and cheered when the referee blew the final whistle. Reading F.C had won after a very even match.
