Unfortunately, he received the ball on his off foot and could only manage a weak shot that went over the goal. 11 minutes into the match, Bourne's goal looked a bit too open when Liam Blakewell came free, but Graham Lofthouse reached the ball before it rolled over the goal line. In the 14th minute, one of Birmingham yyw:s players had the ball in front of the goal but got pushed and fell. The referee felt it was an obvious case and blew a penalty for Birmingham yyw. Stan Lansdell had in the 16thth minute some difficulties stopping Frankie Stockley's well aimed penalty as it nearly passed him on his left side, but he still managed to hold the ball. In the 21st minute Liam Blakewell shot on, it seemed, an open goal, but Graham Lofthouse saw the ball coming and threw himself on it before it passed the goal line. After a defensive mix-up in Bourne's zone, Clive Ellerby stole the ball and had only the goalie to beat. Graham Lofthouse came out of the goal and Clive Ellerby tried to chip the ball over his head. To his dismay, the ball went over the crossbar and out of play. Liam Blakewell's shot was meant for the net just under the crossbar, but Graham Lofthouse read the situation well and was quickly in position to make a wonderful save in the 31st minute of play. A hard shot 37 in the game by Clive Ellerby from a close distance when the talented Graham Lofthouse managed to make a qualified save. Bourne's players were relieved. 38 minutes into the game, Liam Blakewell recieved a splendid long ball, split the defenders, and gently placed the ball to the left of Graham Lofthouse. Liam Blakewell showed that you don't have to tear a hole in the net to score, 1-1. 46 minutes into the match, Birmingham yyw's goal looked a bit too open when Ricky Macken came free, but Stan Lansdell reached the ball before it rolled over the goal line. After fighting hard for a draw in the first half, the players were able to take a much needed rest.

The players of the away team seemed most concentrated when Damian Laycock stepped up to make the kick off in the second half. When Birmingham yyw's Liam Blakewell, in the 55th minute, received a pass right in front of the net, it looked like a certain goal, but his shot went outside. A wasted opportunity for Birmingham yyw. When Birmingham yyw's Clive Ellerby in the 60th minute got a chance for a shot 60th didn't hesitate and placed the ball to the right of the goalie. It was 3-1, 77 minutes into the match. Thanks to some nice foot action and superb ball handling Liam Blakewell in the 82nd minute a chance for a shot on goal. With an extended leg and a bit of luck Graham Lofthouse prevented the ball from getting in the gole. In the 86th minute, Clive Ellerby left the goalkeeper for dead before tapping the ball into the right side of the net. The Birmingham yyw fans were clearly happy with the effort and the scoreboard reflected the new score: 4-1.
