The crowd had been anticipating this game for weeks and the excitement in the stadium was easily visible. After a defensive mix-up in ◄19A10► Horsforth's zone, Adrian Brearley stole the ball and had only the goalie to beat. Joey Senior came out of the goal and Adrian Brearley tried to chip the ball over his head. To his dismay, the ball went over the crossbar and out of play. Adrian Brearley took the ball and in the 6 minute, shot a rapid shot to the right of a surprised Joey Senior. Joey Senior dived to the right, and did manage to get a hand on the shot, but it still went into the right corner making it 0-1. The audience thought a goal was coming when Alec Featherstone got free with Jez Howard in the 9th minute, but the goalkeeper managed to catch the ball with a huge effort. When Danny Knight fell near the penalty area in the 9th minute he thought he would be awarded a free kick. The referee ignored Letchworth United's protests and gave Danny Knight a yellow card for diving instead. In the 10th match minute, Letchworth United was awarded a freekick, the ball was picked up by Danny Knight to maneuver through the defense. Jerry Hayward struck a weak shot in the 12th minute. Jez Howard didn't even have to move as the ball rolled over the line well wide of the goal. A wasted opportunity for ◄19A10► Horsforth. Alec Featherstone fired away a screaming shot towards the goal in the 14th minute, but the shot went just over the crossbar without Jez Howard having to interfere. 17 minutes into the match, ◄19A10► Horsforth's Jerry Hayward sent off a blazing shot straight on target, a shot that Jez Howard narrowly saved just below the crossbar. 19 minutes into the game, Rob Jefferies cracked a shot to the right of the goalkeeper, 0-2. Joey Senior was not in position, and could only watch the ball fly in. 22 minutes into the game, ◄19A10► Horsforth's Alec Featherstone nearly tore a hole in the net with a booming shot. Jez Howard made a valiant effort, but he could not reach the ball in time, 1-2. In the 26th minute Jerry Hayward shot on, it seemed, an open goal, but Jez Howard saw the ball coming and threw himself on it before it passed the goal line. Jerry Hayward blasted a shot towards the goal in the 29th minute, but the shot hit the top of the crossbar and went out without Jez Howard having to make a save. A hard shot 47 in the game by Alec Featherstone from a close distance when the talented Jez Howard managed to make a qualified save. Letchworth United's players were relieved. Even after changing tactics the home team jogged off the field with a 1-2 deficit. They would have to work harder if they wanted to turn things around in the second half.

The players of the home team were most fresh-looking when they entered the field to play the second half. Rob Jefferies was the one to do the kick off. Letchworth United's Adrian Brearley got a good chance for a goal in the 52nd minute, but he totally mistimed the shot and it went over the crossbar. 1-3 became the score in the 53rd minute when Rob Jefferies elegantly shot the ball into goal just under the crossbar. In the 70th match minute, ◄19A10► Horsforth was awarded a freekick, the ball was picked up by Ralph Jackson to maneuver through the defense. Rob Jefferies received a nice pass in the box and took a hard shot in the 73rd minute. Joey Senior tensed up and prepared to dive, but the shot went over the goal with him having to interfere. Jerry Hayward recieved an excellent pass in front of the goal in the 81st minute. Unfortunately, he received the ball on his off foot and could only manage a weak shot that went over the goal. After a rather tough play, Letchworth United's Danny Knight got a free kick in the 82nd minute. Michael Swanson's late challenge caught a Letchworth United's player on the shin and left him crawling around in pain. The referee blew his whistle and produced the yellow card. Michael Swanson helped the player get up and apologised. Austin Cobb kicked well hit freekick during the 88th minute of the match. The Letchworth United supporters could be heard counting down the last seconds of the match. They errupted in celebration when the whistle blew, knowing Letchworth United would go home with victory in their luggage after a match that easily could have ended differently.
