The supporters of Frome City booed when Sutton Valence City was adjudged a doubtful freekick after 19 match minutes in a wonderful position. Stan Burbeary didn't get a good kick on the ball. After 22 minutes, Basil Hamer mouthed his way into the referee's book. The tension between the Sutton Valence City and the Frome City players grew even worse after the yellow card. The audience thought a goal was coming when Alastair Mahon got free with William Spink in the 26th minute, but the goalkeeper managed to catch the ball with a huge effort. Frome City's Bryan Clayton got a good chance for a goal in the 28th minute, but he totally mistimed the shot and it went over the crossbar. Bryan Clayton sent away a hard shot on goal in the 33rd minute, but the ball went just over the crossbar and out. A very good chance. After having played for 36 minutes, Bryan Clayton managed to get in a good position for a shot on goal. Frome City's supporters crossed their fingers, but Bryan Clayton was, after a quick turn that froze the defenders, out of balance and shot the ball just to the right of the goal. 38 minutes into the match, Sutton Valence City's goalkeeper William Spink had to clear away a ball on his right side after a cunning shot by Alastair Mahon. Alastair Mahon came free with the goalkeeper in the 40th minute of the match, and shot straight on target. The shot was a little too simple and William Spink could save by the left post. 40 minutes into the game, Paul Scorfield was given a yellow card after he appeared to trip an opposing player. Sutton Valence City's manager was livid on the sidelines, but the referee was unmoved and gave Frome City the free kick. Frome City's Bryan Clayton got a good chance for a goal in the 43rd minute, but he totally mistimed the shot and it went over the crossbar. The audience thought a goal was coming when Alastair Mahon got free with William Spink in the 46th minute, but the goalkeeper managed to catch the ball with a huge effort. No-one was surprised that the home team were leading 1-0 at half-time.

Both teams looked relatively alert before the second half when the referee blew his whistle to tell Syd Price to make the kick off. Ashley Bettney didn't even have to move as the ball rolled over the line well wide of the goal. A wasted opportunity for Sutton Valence City. 89 minutes into the match, Bryan Clayton notched a goal, 3-1, to the right of Sutton Valence City's William Spink. William Spink was clearly disgusted with the effort of the defense and let the defenders know about it. William Spink didn't have a chance when a screaming shot from Ian Lawless went, in the 95th minute, to the upper right corner, 4-1 was the resulting score. Frome City's supporters were delighted with their team's performance and swarmed onto the pitch at the end of the match to celebrate the victory with the players.
