The ball could have gone into the goal to the right of the goalkeeper, but Jim Castledine showed his good shape when he easily got hold of the ball. Peter Potterton received a nice pass in the box and took a hard shot in the 13th minute. Jim Castledine tensed up and prepared to dive, but the shot went over the goal with him having to interfere. Jim Castledine made a wonderful reflex save on a shot from Peter Potterton in the 15th minute of play. A collision led to Oldham City getting a freekick after 22 minutes play. Gavin Bramhall hit a great ball. The supporters of Oldham City booed when Heywood was adjudged a doubtful freekick after 23 match minutes in a wonderful position. If Peter Potterton had kept his shot down it would have been a goal in the 37th minute. The ball went over the crossbar instead. Heywood's Jim Castledine played magnificently when he managed to stop the ball from hitting the goal, after a sharp shot by Rhys Sutherland in the 38th minute of play. In the 38th minute, Rhys Sutherland ran past the defenders and hit a shot which went straight ahead into goal. Jim Castledine was frozen by the shot and now it was 0-1. Rhys Sutherland fired away a screaming shot towards the goal in the 43rd minute, but the shot went just over the crossbar without Jim Castledine having to interfere.

The wind increased when Calvin Barrett made the kick off in the second half. Peter Potterton received a nice pass, split the defenders, and ran untouched towards the goal. Jim Castledine came out and tried to block the shot, but Peter Potterton slotted it home off the left post making it 0-3 in the 52nd minute. After a defensive mix-up in Heywood's zone, Peter Potterton stole the ball and had only the goalie to beat. Jim Castledine came out of the goal and Peter Potterton tried to chip the ball over his head. To his dismay, the ball went over the crossbar and out of play. If Rhys Sutherland had kept his shot down it would have been a goal in the 58th minute. The ball went over the crossbar and out instead. Rhys Sutherland sent away a hard shot on goal in the 61st minute, but the ball went just over the crossbar and out. A very good chance. In the 71st minute, Wally Cross hit a crossing free kick to the open man running down the field. Rhys Sutherland received a nice pass in the box and took a hard shot in the 74th minute. Jim Castledine made a valiant effort, but he could not reach the ball in time, 0-6. Oldham City's fans were overjoyed with their teams well-earned victory and stayed in the stadium long after the final whistle to celebrate the win.
