The Old Excelsiors FC fans voiced their displeasure as they felt that Shane Lloyd should have stopped the shot. Salford City's Sean Corrigan proved his good apprehension of play when he, in the 30th minute of the match, managed to save Salford City from getting a goal against them. Thanks to some nice foot action and superb ball handling Brendon Atherton in the 31st minute a chance for a shot on goal. With an extended leg and a bit of luck Shane Lloyd prevented the ball from getting in the gole. The goalkeeper, Sean Corrigan, was totally fooled by Old Excelsiors FC's Vic Todd, who 35 minutes into the game made a penalty shot that went in on the goalkeeper's left side. In the 38th match minute, Salford City was awarded a freekick, the ball was picked up by Junior Bancroft to maneuver through the defense. In the 39th minute, Walter Simpson hit a crossing free kick to the open man running down the field. In the 40th minute, Ozzy Whieldon hit a crossing free kick to the open man running down the field. The players of the away team seemed most concentrated when Brendon Atherton stepped up to make the kick off in the second half. After 66 played minutes Old Excelsiors FC got a freekick which was hit by Jo Kidd. Ozzy Whieldon was shown his second yellow card after 68 minutes, following a rather ugly tackle on opponent. That was the end of his participation in the match. In the 69th match minute, Old Excelsiors FC was awarded a freekick, the ball was picked up by Ozzy Whieldon to maneuver through the defense. After having played for 74 minutes, Brendon Atherton managed to get in a good position for a shot on goal. Salford City's supporters crossed their fingers, but Brendon Atherton was, after a quick turn that froze the defenders, out of balance and shot the ball just to the right of the goal. Brendon Atherton's shot was meant for the net just under the crossbar, but Shane Lloyd read the situation well and was quickly in position to make a wonderful save in the 76th minute of play. Shane Lloyd made a fantastic save in the 81st minute, when Walter Simpson sent off a good shot on target. Reg Meade hit a great freekick 83 minutes into the match. The audience thought a goal was coming when Walter Simpson got free with Shane Lloyd in the 85th minute, but the goalkeeper managed to catch the ball with a huge effort. When Benji Marchant came up free with the goalie in the 86th minute, the Salford City fans jumped to their feet. But the shot missed the goal by a fraction of an inch, and the fans sat back down disappointed that Benji Marchant couldn't finish the play. Benji Marchant recieved an excellent pass in front of the goal in the 88th minute. Unfortunately, he received the ball on his off foot and could only manage a weak shot that went over the goal. A collision led to Old Excelsiors FC getting a freekick after 90 minutes play. Toby Woodhead hit a great ball. If Brendon Atherton had kept his shot down it would have been a goal in the 93rd minute. The ball went over the crossbar and out instead. Salford City's players went to the stands to thank the travelling support. The fan's backing had helped spurr the team on to a fine performance that won them the match.
