The crowd had been anticipating this game for weeks and the excitement in the stadium was easily visible. If Matty Oddy had kept his shot down it would have been a goal in the 3rd minute. The ball went over the crossbar and out instead. Matty Oddy fired away a screaming shot towards the goal in the 12th minute, but the shot went just over the crossbar without Reg Gerrard having to interfere. In the 13th match minute, South Shields was awarded a freekick, the ball was picked up by Matty Oddy to maneuver through the defense. 15 minutes into the match, Stevenage FC's goal looked a bit too open when Timothy Elliott came free, but Reg Gerrard reached the ball before it rolled over the goal line. 0-2 became the score in the 18th minute when Timothy Elliott elegantly shot the ball into goal just under the crossbar. If Matty Oddy had kept his shot down it would have been a goal in the 23rd minute. The ball went over the crossbar and out instead. Rory Monkhouse's late challenge caught a South Shields's player on the shin and left him crawling around in pain. The referee blew his whistle and produced the yellow card. Rory Monkhouse helped the player get up and apologised. A collision led to Stevenage FC getting a freekick after 27 minutes play. Rory Monkhouse hit a great ball. An unexpectedly hard shot by Matty Oddy in the 29th minute of play forced Stevenage FC's goalkeeper Reg Gerrard to throw himself to the left, to be able to save the ball. Rory Monkhouse's shot was meant for the net just under the crossbar, but Damon Quinn read the situation well and was quickly in position to make a wonderful save in the 31st minute of play. When Rory Monkhouse was, once again, overly rough in his play he received his second yellow card and was ordered off the ground. 33 minutes had been played. After 33 played minutes Stevenage FC got a freekick which was hit by Rory Monkhouse. South Shields's Damon Quinn played magnificently when he managed to stop the ball from hitting the goal, after a sharp shot by Gary Woodford in the 38th minute of play. 42 minutes into the match, Timothy Elliott notched a goal, 0-3, to the right of Stevenage FC's Reg Gerrard. Reg Gerrard was clearly disgusted with the effort of the defense and let the defenders know about it. The supporters of South Shields booed when Stevenage FC was adjudged a doubtful freekick after 46 match minutes in a wonderful position. Sean Mortlock didn't get a good kick on the ball. Thanks to some nice foot action and superb ball handling Matty Oddy in the 47th minute a chance for a shot on goal. With an extended leg and a bit of luck Reg Gerrard prevented the ball from getting in the gole. After the first half South Shields were leading 0-3. They had played with great self confidence throughout the first half and fully deserved their lead.

Both teams looked relatively alert before the second half when the referee blew his whistle to tell Timothy Elliott to make the kick off. If Matty Oddy had kept his shot down it would have been a goal in the 58th minute. The ball went over the crossbar and out instead. An unexpectedly hard shot by Carl Green in the 62nd minute of play forced South Shields's goalkeeper Damon Quinn to throw himself to the left, to be able to save the ball. An unexpected shot in the 64th minute by Timothy Elliott got the crowd on their feet, but to their dismay it went out on the left side. Thanks to some nice foot action and superb ball handling Timothy Elliott in the 67th minute a chance for a shot on goal. With an extended leg and a bit of luck Reg Gerrard prevented the ball from getting in the gole. Stevenage FC's defense didn't have a chance, in the 72nd minute, when Timothy Elliott scored to the left of an out of position Reg Gerrard, making the score, 0-4. Reg Gerrard showed his good apprehension of the play when he made a fantastic save on a shot from Timothy Elliott, who was totally free with the ball in the 77th minute. Reg Gerrard took care of the ball after a well-directed shot from Timothy Elliott, even though the ball almost passed him on his left side. If Timothy Elliott had kept his shot down it would have been a goal in the 89th minute. The ball went over the crossbar instead. When the final whistle was heard the away supporters stood up and showed their joy. South Shields had managed to secure a win in what was a close match throughout.
