In the 41st minute Anthony Byrom shot on, it seemed, an open goal, but Ray Alsford saw the ball coming and threw himself on it before it passed the goal line. In the 44th minute, Sidney Dennison got an opportunity to score, but he didn't get a solid hit on the ball and ended up kicking it wide of the goal. Justin Fry made a fantastic save in the 47th minute, when Jordan Budge sent off a good shot on target. Budleigh Salterton's Ray Alsford played magnificently when he managed to stop the ball from hitting the goal, after a sharp shot by Jack Trotter in the 48th minute of play. The away team players looked dejected as the walked off the pitch at half time. They had fought hard, but were still losing 2-1.

The players of the home team were most fresh-looking when they entered the field to play the second half. Sidney Dennison was the one to do the kick off. In the 60th minute, Canvey Island's Spike Hall ran free of his marker and smoothly shot the ball into the goal behind Ray Alsford. Ray Alsford yelled at his defense, as they had left him out to dry. 3-2. The supporters of Canvey Island booed when Budleigh Salterton was adjudged a doubtful freekick after 90 match minutes in a wonderful position. Barrie Towler didn't get a good kick on the ball.
