Nottingham Forest's Rhys Rain started the match with a crisp pass. The crowd had been anticipating this game for weeks and the excitement in the stadium was easily visible. Beinn Meadowcroft made a wonderful reflex save on a shot from Alf Broadhurst in the 3rd minute of play. Warren Bolton showed his good apprehension of the play when he made a fantastic save on a shot from Jeff Brighton, who was totally free with the ball in the 4th minute. In the 20th minute, Rhys Rain made a precise shot to the right of Beinn Meadowcroft. Chelsea's defense was at fault, and the scoreboard reflected the new score, 1-1. When Rhys Rain came up free with the goalie in the 28th minute, the Nottingham Forest fans jumped to their feet. But the shot missed the goal by a fraction of an inch, and the fans sat back down disappointed that Rhys Rain couldn't finish the play. Beinn Meadowcroft made a wonderful reflex save on a shot from Rhys Rain in the 29th minute of play. After some fancy dribbling in the 31st minute, Alf Broadhurst managed to get in a good position for a shot. Nottingham Forest's supporters rose to their feet, but Alf Broadhurst was a bit off balance and shot the ball just wide of the left post. Beinn Meadowcroft breathed a sigh of relief and went to take the goal kick. Rhys Rain sent away a hard shot on goal in the 33rd minute, but the ball went just over the crossbar and out. A very good chance. 35 minutes into the game, Blair Eagles was given a yellow card after he appeared to trip an opposing player. Nottingham Forest's manager was livid on the sidelines, but the referee was unmoved and gave Chelsea the free kick. Beinn Meadowcroft took care of the ball after a well-directed shot from Rhys Rain, even though the ball almost passed him on his left side. After 39 played minutes Chelsea got a freekick which was hit by Dylon Kershaw. When Eric Speight fell near the penalty area in the 41st minute he thought he would be awarded a free kick. The referee ignored Chelsea's protests and gave Eric Speight a yellow card for diving instead. Beinn Meadowcroft showed his good apprehension of the play when he made a fantastic save on a shot from Rhys Rain, who was totally free with the ball in the 42nd minute. Jeff Brighton recieved an excellent pass in front of the goal in the 44th minute. Unfortunately, he received the ball on his off foot and could only manage a weak shot that went over the goal. Even after changing tactics the home team jogged off the field with a 1-2 deficit. They would have to work harder if they wanted to turn things around in the second half.

Both teams looked relatively alert before the second half when the referee blew his whistle to tell Jeff Brighton to make the kick off. An unexpectedly hard shot by Jeff Brighton in the 53rd minute of play forced Nottingham Forest's goalkeeper Warren Bolton to throw himself to the left, to be able to save the ball. Beinn Meadowcroft took care of the ball after a well-directed shot from Sebastian Cummings, even though the ball almost passed him on his left side. The crowd rose to their feet as Steven Abbotts kicked a wonderful shot that went in to the left of a diving Beinn Meadowcroft. That made the score 1-3 in the 55 minute of play. After some careless play in the Chelsea defense, Sebastian Cummings kicked a shot that curved into the net to the right of Beinn Meadowcroft. The Chelsea fans voiced their displeasure as they felt that Beinn Meadowcroft should have stopped the shot. In the 63rd match minute, Nottingham Forest was awarded a freekick, the ball was picked up by Laurence Stubbs to maneuver through the defense. In the 65th minute, Alf Broadhurst left the goalkeeper for dead before tapping the ball into the right side of the net. The Nottingham Forest fans were clearly happy with the effort and the scoreboard reflected the new score: 1-5. Sebastian Cummings's late challenge caught a Chelsea's player on the shin and left him crawling around in pain. The referee blew his whistle and produced the yellow card. Sebastian Cummings helped the player get up and apologised. The supporters of Chelsea booed when Nottingham Forest was adjudged a doubtful freekick after 77 match minutes in a wonderful position. Sebastian Cummings didn't get a good kick on the ball. Reggie Stewart was probably a little too eager to shoot when he, in the 78th played minute, shot the ball from way out. The shot was hard, but the ball flew wide of the goal. With a little luck, Chelsea's Beinn Meadowcroft got control of the ball when Alf Broadhurst tried to sneak it across the goal line. After a rather tough play, Chelsea's Greg Kirkpatrick got a free kick in the 96th minute. Nottingham Forest's players went to the stands to thank the travelling support. The fan's backing had helped spurr the team on to a fine performance that won them the match.
