A very good chance. 35 minutes into the game, Blair Eagles was given a yellow card after he appeared to trip an opposing player. Nottingham Forest's manager was livid on the sidelines, but the referee was unmoved and gave Chelsea the free kick. Beinn Meadowcroft took care of the ball after a well-directed shot from Rhys Rain, even though the ball almost passed him on his left side. After 39 played minutes Chelsea got a freekick which was hit by Dylon Kershaw. When Eric Speight fell near the penalty area in the 41st minute he thought he would be awarded a free kick. The referee ignored Chelsea's protests and gave Eric Speight a yellow card for diving instead. Even after changing tactics the home team jogged off the field with a 1-2 deficit. They would have to work harder if they wanted to turn things around in the second half.

Both teams looked relatively alert before the second half when the referee blew his whistle to tell Jeff Brighton to make the kick off. The Chelsea fans voiced their displeasure as they felt that Beinn Meadowcroft should have stopped the shot. In the 63rd match minute, Nottingham Forest was awarded a freekick, the ball was picked up by Laurence Stubbs to maneuver through the defense. In the 65th minute, Alf Broadhurst left the goalkeeper for dead before tapping the ball into the right side of the net. The Nottingham Forest fans were clearly happy with the effort and the scoreboard reflected the new score: 1-5. The fan's backing had helped spurr the team on to a fine performance that won them the match.
