The audience thought a goal was coming when Freddy Blacknell got free with Rio Whalley in the 19th minute, but the goalkeeper managed to catch the ball with a huge effort. Settle's Rio Whalley proved his good apprehension of play when he, in the 31st minute of the match, managed to save Settle from getting a goal against them. Donald Hellen scored 2-0 in the 39th match minute with a shot that went into the goal to the right of Rio Whalley, who was just a little too slow in reacting to the shot. With a little luck, Settle's Rio Whalley got control of the ball when Freddy Blacknell tried to sneak it across the goal line. 44 minutes into the match, Settle's goal looked a bit too open when Ronnie Hylton came free, but Rio Whalley reached the ball before it rolled over the goal line. A collision led to Settle getting a freekick after 47 minutes play. Leon Pyrah hit a great ball.

An unexpectedly hard shot by Freddy Blacknell in the 57th minute of play forced Settle's goalkeeper Rio Whalley to throw himself to the left, to be able to save the ball. Rufus Marchant showed brilliant goalkeeper skills when he caught the ball after a hard shot from William Martindale in the 64th minute of the match. An unexpected shot in the 70th minute by Bob Love got the crowd on their feet, but to their dismay it went out on the left side. 76 minutes into the match, Settle's goal looked a bit too open when Johnathon Hamilton came free, but Rio Whalley reached the ball before it rolled over the goal line. Rio Whalley made a wonderful reflex save on a shot from Ronnie Hylton in the 78th minute of play. 82 minutes into the match, Settle's goal looked a bit too open when Freddy Blacknell came free, but Rio Whalley reached the ball before it rolled over the goal line. When Ronnie Hylton came up free with the goalie in the 97th minute, the Carlisle United fans jumped to their feet. But the shot missed the goal by a fraction of an inch, and the fans sat back down disappointed that Ronnie Hylton couldn't finish the play. There were very few away supporters still in the ground by the end of the match. Most of them had left early, disgusted by the way their team had been torn apart. Carlisle United fully deserved thier win.
