HFC Haarlem's Jan Vroom quite brazenly broke a throw-in by Pierre Rooy, made in the 9th minute of the game. In the 11th minute of the match Johannes Nordin sent off a long shot with destination to the right of the goalkeeper, but Klaus Zoolingen skillfully saved the ball. Werner Rieks recieved an excellent pass in front of the goal in the 13th minute. Unfortunately, he received the ball on his off foot and could only manage a weak shot that went over the goal. A collision led to Geestdorp SV getting a freekick after 16 minutes play. Pierre Rooy hit a great ball. After 17 played minutes, HFC Haarlem's Johannes Nordin shot from a long distance, and at first it looked like the ball was going into the goal, but the goalkeeper Klaus Zoolingen came through and got his fingers on the ball before it flew over the goal line. He then quickly gripped the ball tighter before the forwards in HFC Haarlem reached it. After a rather tough play, Geestdorp SV's Roy Hateboer got a free kick in the 18th minute. If Werner Rieks had kept his shot down it would have been a goal in the 19th minute. The ball went over the crossbar and out instead. After 27 minutes, Bruno Bernard mouthed his way into the referee's book. The tension between the Geestdorp SV and the HFC Haarlem players grew even worse after the yellow card. Bruno Bernard hit a great freekick 27 minutes into the match. When HFC Haarlem's Werner Rieks in the 29th minute got a chance for a shot 29th didn't hesitate and placed the ball to the right of the goalie. In the 35th minute, Damien Need got an opportunity to score, but he didn't get a solid hit on the ball and ended up kicking it wide of the goal. Werner Rieks recieved an excellent pass in front of the goal in the 37th minute. Unfortunately, he received the ball on his off foot and could only manage a weak shot that went over the goal. Klaus Zoolingen showed his good apprehension of the play when he made a fantastic save on a shot from Werner Rieks, who was totally free with the ball in the 40th minute. In the 41st minute, Leandro Birjaio ran past the defenders and hit a shot which went straight ahead into goal. Klaus Zoolingen was frozen by the shot and now it was 0-2. Damien Zegeling made an important save on a dangerous shot by Henk-Jan Kloppenburg in the 46th minute. After the first half HFC Haarlem were leading 0-2. They had played with great self confidence throughout the first half and fully deserved their lead.

Both teams looked relatively alert before the second half when the referee blew his whistle to tell Kevin Roordink to make the kick off. 55 minutes into the match, Geestdorp SV's goalkeeper Klaus Zoolingen had to clear away a ball on his right side after a cunning shot by Damien Need. When the match had been going on for 60 minutes, HFC Haarlem's Thijs Engbers got an opportunity to shoot a penalty. He stayed cool and waited for the goalkeeper to move, before he confidently shot the ball into the goal, to the left of Klaus Zoolingen. After a rather tough play, HFC Haarlem's Damien Need got a free kick in the 64th minute. Werner Rieks who was well placed in front of the goal fired away a dangerous shot that in the 66thth minute tested the skills of Klaus Zoolingen when he managed to save the team from getting behind. Leandro Birjaio received a nice pass in the box and took a hard shot in the 66th minute. Klaus Zoolingen tensed up and prepared to dive, but the shot went over the goal with him having to interfere. A collision led to HFC Haarlem getting a freekick after 67 minutes play. Laurens Schulte hit a great ball. In the 70th minute of the match Johannes Nordin sent off a long shot with destination to the right of the goalkeeper, but Klaus Zoolingen skillfully saved the ball. After 75 played minutes HFC Haarlem got a freekick which was hit by Karel Rademaker. 76 minutes into the game, Geestdorp SV's Henk-Jan Kloppenburg nearly tore a hole in the net with a booming shot. Damien Zegeling made a valiant effort, but he could not reach the ball in time, 1-3. Olaf de Putter fired away a screaming shot towards the goal in the 80th minute, but the shot went just over the crossbar without Damien Zegeling having to interfere. 85 minutes into the game, HFC Haarlem's Werner Rieks nearly tore a hole in the net with a booming shot. Klaus Zoolingen made a valiant effort, but he could not reach the ball in time, 1-4. Klaus Zoolingen showed his good apprehension of the play when he made a fantastic save on a shot from Werner Rieks, who was totally free with the ball in the 88th minute. After some careless play in the HFC Haarlem defense, Olaf de Putter kicked a shot that curved into the net to the right of Damien Zegeling. The HFC Haarlem fans voiced their displeasure as they felt that Damien Zegeling should have stopped the shot.
