After some fancy dribbling in the 16th minute, Jan-Peter van den Hoogen managed to get in a good position for a shot. Doetinchem Excelsior's supporters rose to their feet, but Jan-Peter van den Hoogen was a bit off balance and shot the ball just wide of the left post. Bertus Rodenberg breathed a sigh of relief and went to take the goal kick. Huub Okkes struck a weak shot in the 18th minute. David Pilage didn't even have to move as the ball rolled over the line well wide of the goal. A wasted opportunity for Lutte. Huub Okkes could have scored with his fast shot on goal in the 22nd minute of the match, but David Pilage made a huge save. In the 23rd minute the ball was on its way in behind Lutte's goalkeeper Bertus Rodenberg, but with the help of a sacrificing defense, he could catch the ball at the crossbar. A collision led to Lutte getting a freekick after 27 minutes play. Gregor de Boer hit a great ball. If Roland Hoekstra had kept his shot down it would have been a goal in the 30th minute. The ball went over the crossbar and out instead. Bertus Rodenberg showed his good apprehension of the play when he made a fantastic save on a shot from Jan-Peter van den Hoogen, who was totally free with the ball in the 37th minute. An unexpectedly hard shot by Jan-Peter van den Hoogen in the 39th minute of play forced Lutte's goalkeeper Bertus Rodenberg to throw himself to the left, to be able to save the ball. In the 40th minute Theo Schimmel suffered a thigh injury and had to be helped off the field. During the 40th minute of the match Gregor de Boer completely mistimed his tackle and brought down his opponent. The referee gave Gregor de Boer a yellow card, his second in the match, which meant he could no longer take part in the game. Gregor de Boer hit a great freekick 42 minutes into the match. 46 minutes into the match, Lutte's goal looked a bit too open when Jan Sligter came free, but Bertus Rodenberg reached the ball before it rolled over the goal line. After a very even first half the match was still tied. The players went to their respective dressing rooms to discuss the tactics for the second half.
