If Wilfred Zwarthoet had kept his shot down it would have been a goal in the 16th minute. The ball went over the crossbar and out instead. Aalburg made a substitution. Cor Hostede replaced Elmar Bouwens. A collision led to ajax getting a freekick after 22 minutes play. Roderick Scheper hit a great ball. Cor Wiarda showed his good apprehension of the play when he made a fantastic save on a shot from Martin van Gessel, who was totally free with the ball in the 24th minute. Gooitzen Drok kicked well hit freekick during the 45th minute of the match. After a defensive mix-up in Aalburg's zone, Martin van Gessel stole the ball and had only the goalie to beat. Cor Wiarda came out of the goal and Martin van Gessel tried to chip the ball over his head. To his dismay, the ball went over the crossbar and out of play.

Both teams looked relatively alert before the second half when the referee blew his whistle to tell Jean-Paul Dirks to make the kick off. Cor Wiarda made a wonderful reflex save on a shot from Martin van Gessel in the 60th minute of play. An unexpectedly hard shot by Martin van Gessel in the 61st minute of play forced Aalburg's goalkeeper Cor Wiarda to throw himself to the left, to be able to save the ball. 63 minutes into the match, Aalburg's Jean-Paul Dirks sent off a blazing shot straight on target, a shot that Ronald Velthuis narrowly saved just below the crossbar. The supporters of Aalburg booed when ajax was adjudged a doubtful freekick after 70 match minutes in a wonderful position. Peter Driel didn't get a good kick on the ball. With a couple of smart ball manuevers Peter Driel in the 93rd managed to get into a good position. With a left leg Cor Wiarda saved Aalburg from getting behind.
