Joep Haar took care of the ball after a well-directed shot from Martin van Gessel, even though the ball almost passed him on his left side. Peter Driel sent away a hard shot on goal in the 19th minute, but the ball went just over the crossbar and out. A very good chance. Martin van Gessel recieved an excellent pass in front of the goal in the 20th minute. Unfortunately, he received the ball on his off foot and could only manage a weak shot that went over the goal. Joep Haar showed his good apprehension of the play when he made a fantastic save on a shot from Martin van Gessel, who was totally free with the ball in the 24th minute. Rogier van der Tol received a nice pass in the box and took a hard shot in the 25th minute. Ronald Velthuis tensed up and prepared to dive, but the shot went over the goal with him having to interfere. Peter Driel fired away a screaming shot towards the goal in the 32nd minute, but the shot went just over the crossbar without Joep Haar having to interfere. After a rather tough play, ajax's Jan Akkerman got a free kick in the 34th minute. Derk van Zijderveld kicked well hit freekick during the 37th minute of the match. Martin van Gessel sent away a hard shot on goal in the 38th minute, but the ball went just over the crossbar and out. A very good chance. Joep Haar came out of the goal in the 40th minute to try and stop a shot by ajax's Martin van Gessel. But to his dismay, Martin van Gessel quickly shot the ball in between his legs and into the goal making it 0-1. After 43 played minutes sparta rotterdam got a freekick which was hit by Bertus Ensing. Disappointed in the 0-1 score, the home team went to the dressing room to adjust tactics for the second half.

The audience thought a goal was coming when Peter Driel got free with Joep Haar in the 54th minute, but the goalkeeper managed to catch the ball with a huge effort. Martin van Gessel succeeded in the game's 86th minute to shoot an unreachable shot under the crossbar and scored - 0-3. In the 95th minute the ball was on its way in behind sparta rotterdam's goalkeeper Joep Haar, but with the help of a sacrificing defense, he could catch the ball at the crossbar. The away crowd were delighted with the way their team had played and cheered loudly when the final whistle sounded. ajax walked away with the win, even though the match was close until the end.
