Fred Bruckmann made a fantastic save in the 12th minute, when Batu Cem Yalçın sent off a good shot on target. The supporters of Stanway booed when Paignton was adjudged a doubtful freekick after 32 match minutes in a wonderful position. Ryszard Smolarek didn't get a good kick on the ball. 34 minutes into the game, Stanway's Bodo Jentzsch nearly tore a hole in the net with a booming shot. Napoleon Nakonieczny made a valiant effort, but he could not reach the ball in time, 0-2. A collision led to Paignton getting a freekick after 37 minutes play. Bengt-Rune Billock hit a great ball. The audience thought a goal was coming when Bengt-Rune Billock got free with Fred Bruckmann in the 39th minute, but the goalkeeper managed to catch the ball with a huge effort. Martin Páral's late challenge caught a Stanway's player on the shin and left him crawling around in pain. The referee blew his whistle and produced the yellow card. The audience thought a goal was coming when Batu Cem Yalçın got free with Fred Bruckmann in the 45th minute, but the goalkeeper managed to catch the ball with a huge effort. In the 46th minute, Paignton's Batu Cem Yalçın dribbled the ball into the box and hit a shot with the outside of his foot, sending the keeper the wrong way. 1-2. After the first half Stanway were leading 1-2. They had played with great self confidence throughout the first half and fully deserved their lead.

The players of the away team seemed most concentrated when Batu Cem Yalçın stepped up to make the kick off in the second half. Napoleon Nakonieczny showed brilliant goalkeeper skills when he caught the ball after a hard shot from George Bodenheimer in the 54th minute of the match. Stanway's Fred Bruckmann played magnificently when he managed to stop the ball from hitting the goal, after a sharp shot by Bengt-Rune Billock in the 56th minute of play. Fred Bruckmann dived to the right, and did manage to get a hand on the shot, but it still went into the right corner making it 2-3. In the 81st minute Martin Páral shot on, it seemed, an open goal, but Fred Bruckmann saw the ball coming and threw himself on it before it passed the goal line. 82 minutes into the game, Bodo Fabel was given a yellow card after he appeared to trip an opposing player.
