Thanks to some nice foot action and superb ball handling Jean-Charles Rinaldi in the 10th minute a chance for a shot on goal. With an extended leg and a bit of luck Roman Chassang prevented the ball from getting in the gole. Roman Chassang made an important save on a dangerous shot by Bixente Fréchet in the 14th minute. After some fancy dribbling in the 17th minute, Samy Dartiguelongue managed to get in a good position for a shot. Stade de Reims's supporters rose to their feet, but Samy Dartiguelongue was a bit off balance and shot the ball just wide of the left post. Honoré Descarpentries breathed a sigh of relief and went to take the goal kick. In the 22nd minute the ball was on its way in behind Lokomotiv Lelle's goalkeeper Honoré Descarpentries, but with the help of a sacrificing defense, he could catch the ball at the crossbar. When Stade de Reims's Bruno Jule in the 23rd minute got a chance for a shot 23rd didn't hesitate and placed the ball to the right of the goalie. A beautiful save bye Lokomotiv Lelle's goalie prevented a goal. Jean-Charles Rinaldi sent away a hard shot on goal in the 27th minute, but the ball went just over the crossbar and out. A very good chance. Jean-Charles Rinaldi recieved an excellent pass in front of the goal in the 30th minute. Unfortunately, he received the ball on his off foot and could only manage a weak shot that went over the goal. In the 41st minute, Bixente Fréchet fired away a killer shot towards the goal that, to the delight of Roman Chassang, passed just outside the right post. In the 45th minute of the match, Jean-Charles Rinaldi tried to roll the ball into the goal by the right post, but Roman Chassang saw his intentions and got control of the ball before it passed the line. The first half was very even, with the score at 0-0 when the whistle went for half-time. The players welcomed the break and quickly retired to the dressing rooms.

The wind increased when Jean-Charles Rinaldi made the kick off in the second half. If Bixente Fréchet had kept his shot down it would have been a goal in the 51st minute. The ball went over the crossbar instead. Bixente Fréchet's shot was meant for the net just under the crossbar, but Roman Chassang read the situation well and was quickly in position to make a wonderful save in the 52nd minute of play. Roman Chassang made a wonderful reflex save on a shot from Harold Rousson in the 90th minute of play. After 90 played minutes Stade de Reims got a freekick which was hit by Malik Coquelet. When Lokomotiv Lelle's Bixente Fréchet, in the 92nd minute, received a pass right in front of the net, it looked like a certain goal, but his shot went outside. A wasted opportunity for Lokomotiv Lelle. Stade de Reims's supporters were very happy and cheered loudly because their team had won after a very close match.
