The Stade Rennais fans' excitement grew in the 3rd match minute when Stade Rennais's Jean-Paul Coroller looked to have a clear shot with the ball near the goal. The shot wasn't hard, but the ball still rolled over the goal line to make it 1-0 before the goalkeeper had a chance to intervene. In the 8th match minute, Stade de Reims was awarded a freekick, the ball was picked up by Samy Dartiguelongue to maneuver through the defense. Jean-Paul Coroller sent away a hard shot on goal in the 19th minute, but the ball went just over the crossbar and out. A very good chance. Paul-Émile Mathelin showed his good apprehension of the play when he made a fantastic save on a shot from Bruno Jule, who was totally free with the ball in the 22nd minute. Stade de Reims's Bruno Jule got a good chance for a goal in the 24th minute, but he totally mistimed the shot and it went over the crossbar. Gameiro Leman could have scored with his fast shot on goal in the 33rd minute of the match, but Roman Chassang made a huge save. Jean-Paul Coroller struck a weak shot in the 35th minute. Roman Chassang didn't even have to move as the ball rolled over the line well wide of the goal. A wasted opportunity for Stade Rennais. Roman Chassang made an important save on a dangerous shot by Gameiro Leman in the 41st minute. Thanks to some nice foot action and superb ball handling Jean-Paul Coroller in the 42nd minute a chance for a shot on goal. With an extended leg and a bit of luck Roman Chassang prevented the ball from getting in the gole. Malik Coquelet charged in rather forcefully in the 44th minute of the match, and managed to knock his opponent down. The referee showed Malik Coquelet the yellow card, and asked the players to shake hands before continuing play. In the 44th minute, Malik Coquelet hit a crossing free kick to the open man running down the field. Af the end of the first half the score was 1-0. The first half had gone as expected for the home team.

The wind increased when Jean-Paul Coroller made the kick off in the second half. 52 minutes into the game, Stade Rennais's Gameiro Leman nearly tore a hole in the net with a booming shot. Roman Chassang made a valiant effort, but he could not reach the ball in time, 2-0. In the 55th minute Jean-Paul Coroller shot on, it seemed, an open goal, but Roman Chassang saw the ball coming and threw himself on it before it passed the goal line. Roman Chassang showed brilliant goalkeeper skills when he caught the ball after a hard shot from Jean-Paul Coroller in the 58th minute of the match. Thanks to some nice foot action and superb ball handling Gameiro Leman in the 60th minute a chance for a shot on goal. In the 67th minute of the match Yazid Saint-Paul sent off a long shot with destination to the right of the goalkeeper, but Roman Chassang skillfully saved the ball. Roman Chassang made a wonderful reflex save on a shot from Jean-Paul Coroller in the 68th minute of play. 70 minutes into the match, Stade de Reims's goal looked a bit too open when Gameiro Leman came free, but Roman Chassang reached the ball before it rolled over the goal line. In the 72nd match minute, Stade Rennais was awarded a freekick, the ball was picked up by Roger Brégeon to maneuver through the defense. An unexpected shot in the 78th minute by Bruno Jule got the crowd on their feet, but to their dismay it went out on the left side. If Jean-Paul Coroller had kept his shot down it would have been a goal in the 80th minute. Stade de Reims's Roman Chassang played magnificently when he managed to stop the ball from hitting the goal, after a sharp shot by Jean-Paul Coroller in the 96th minute of play.
